How Does The DL2 Smart Lock Actually Lock?

WME DL2 SMART LOCK

Jo Bebbington |

One of the most common questions we get at WME is: "If I install this smart lock, do I lose my door handle?"

For many customers, the idea of removing their solid brass handle or sturdy mortice lock feels wrong. And they are right.

There is a huge misconception that a smart lock must replace everything on your door. The WME DL2 is designed differently. It is engineered to work alongside your existing hardware, not replace it.

In this post, we explain exactly how the DL2 locks your door, where it sits, and why "Two Locks are Better Than One."

The "Two Lock" System: A British Standard

Take a look at a standard wooden front door in the UK. You likely have two locks:

  1. The Handle (Waist Height): This operates the big "Mortice Deadlock." You usually only lock this with a key when you go out for the day or go to bed.
  2. The Nightlatch (Shoulder Height): This is the smaller, round lock (often called a "Yale lock") that clicks shut automatically when you close the door.

The WME DL2 replaces #2 (The Nightlatch).

It does not replace your handle.

How the WME DL2 Locks Your Door

Think of the WME DL2 as a "Smart Nightlatch." It sits in the exact same position as your old mechanical rim lock, about a third of the way down the door, usually above the handle.

Here is the mechanics of the security it provides:

1. The Motorised Latch

Instead of a spring-loaded latch that you have to manually pull back with a jagged metal key, the DL2 uses a motorised stainless steel bolt.

  • When you close the door: A sensor detects the frame. The motor instantly drives the bolt into the keep, securing the door.
  • When you scan your finger/keycard/enter code etc: The motor retracts the bolt in under 0.5 seconds, allowing you to push the door open.

2. "Supplemental" Security

The DL2 is designed to be your Daily Driver. It provides high-tech convenience for the 99% of times you enter and leave the house.

  • The Convenience Layer: You use the DL2 to pop out to the shops, walk the dog, or let the kids in from school. It locks automatically behind you, so your home is never left unsecured.
  • The Heavy Duty Layer: Your original handle and Mortice Deadlock remain in place. When you go on holiday or lock up for the night, you can engage both the Smart DL2 and your mechanical Mortice lock for maximum physical security.

Why This Setup is Safer

By keeping your handle and mortice lock, you are actually creating a Multi-Layered Security System.

If a burglar somehow managed to bypass one lock (which is incredibly difficult with the DL2’s anti-tamper alarm), they would still face a completely separate mechanical deadlock. This "Belt and Braces" approach is often preferred by security experts.

Visualising the Install

If you are struggling to picture how it looks, imagine this:

  • OUTSIDE: We remove the small round key cylinder (the "Yale" circle). We replace it with the sleek WME DL2 Keypad. Your big door handle/knocker/letterbox stays exactly where it is.
  • INSIDE: We remove the metal box of the nightlatch. We replace it with the WME DL2 Battery Housing and Thumbturn.

Conclusion

The WME DL2 isn't about removing the character of your door or lowering your security. It is about upgrading the top half of your door to the 21st century.

You keep the classic look and heavy security of your handle, but you gain the magic of keyless entry. It’s the best of both worlds.
