Wall & Porch Lights

Wall and porch lights here are Knightsbridge fittings for exterior walls and entrances: fixed single lights and up and down lights that take GU10 lamps, LED wall lanterns and half lanterns, TORO coach lanterns, adjustable wall lights, and versions with a PIR or photocell sensor. Materials include stainless steel, die-cast aluminium and polycarbonate. Small recessed LED guide lights such as the NH020W add low-level light on stairs and walls.

Choosing Wall & Porch Lights

Choose the fitting type first, then the sensor, the lamp and the IP rating for the wall it will go on.

Up and down or single

An up and down light washes the wall above and below the fitting. The OWALL02BK takes 2 x 20W max GU10 lamps in 201 stainless steel with a matt black finish, and the WALL2L takes 2 x 35W, though it is not suitable for conduit installations. The WAD12ABK uses LEDs instead, 2 x 6W at 3000K, with a beam angle adjustable from 0° to 100° on each side independently. Single fixed lights such as the OWALL1W take one 20W max GU10, and the WALL3 is adjustable.

PIR and photocell sensors

The EAPIR1BK detects movement up to 12m across a 110-degree angle, with a hold-on time adjustable from 10 seconds to 5 minutes and an ambient light threshold from 10 lux to daylight. The LANT2 lantern's PIR reaches up to 8m at 90° and has a manual override. Photocell models switch automatically with the light level, such as the OWALL02AP for dusk-to-dawn lighting and the LANT3BKP half lantern, which also has a manual override.

Lanterns

The LANT1 is an 8W LED wall lantern with the lamp included, giving 400 lumens at 4000K, and the LANT3 half lantern gives 440 lumens. The TORODO and TOROUP coach lanterns have an adjustable CCT of 3000K or 4000K. For a traditional look, the LANTSS takes an E27 lamp of up to 40W in a 304 stainless steel body with clear glass.

Materials

The ALANA, EAMON and TORO ranges are all polycarbonate, while the WALL2LBK and WAD12ABK are die-cast aluminium.

How far does a PIR wall light detect movement?

The EAMON EAPIR1BK and EAPIR2BK detect up to 12m across a 110-degree angle. The LANT2 and LANT4 lanterns detect up to 8m at 90°. The stainless steel WALL4LSS and WALL5LSS detect up to 8m at a height of 2.4m with a 110° angle, so mount them near that height to get that range.

What does a photocell sensor do on a wall light?

A photocell switches the light automatically according to the surrounding brightness. The OWALL02AP up and down light uses it for automatic dusk-to-dawn lighting, and the OWALL1AP single light for automatic operation at dusk. The LANT1BKP and LANT3BKP lanterns have a photocell too, and the LANT3BKP adds a manual override.

What IP rating should an outdoor wall light have?

Match the rating to how exposed the wall is. The WALL1 and WALL3 are IP65 for water and dust protection, while IP54 fittings such as the OWALL01W are resistant to dust and splashes. The LANTSS lantern is rated IP23, for protection against dripping water, so it suits a more sheltered spot.

Can I dim an outdoor wall light?

Yes, many GU10 fittings are dimmable when a dimmable lamp is fitted. The OWALL02BK, WALL2L and EAMON EA2BK are dimmable depending on the lamp used, and their lamps are not included. The LANT1 lantern is not dimmable, and the NH019W recessed guide light is non-dimmable too.

Do outdoor wall lights come with a lamp?

Some do. The LANT1 and LANT1W LED lanterns include their lamp, and the NH017W has fixed non-replaceable LEDs. GU10 fittings such as the OWALL1W, EA1W and WALL1 come without a lamp, so choose one within the stated maximum: 20W for the OWALL1W, 5W LED for the EA1W and 35W for the WALL1.

Which wall lights suit coastal areas?

The ALANA and EAMON polycarbonate fittings are corrosion resistant and suited to coastal areas. The ALANA ALS1BK, for example, is IP65 in matt black, and the EAMON EA1BB is IP54 in a brushed brass finish.
