Dummy Cameras & Decoy Bell Boxes

Dummy cameras and decoy bell boxes give a building the look of CCTV or an alarm sounder as a visual deterrent. The range has Texecom Odyssey dummy backplates, a dummy bell box and a dummy cover, Pyronix Deltabell backplates in amber, black, blue, green and red, Mercury dummy dome and bullet cameras, an Eaton dummy siren backplate and a Haydon flashing LED module for dummy bell boxes.

Choosing Dummy Cameras & Decoy Bell Boxes

Choose a dummy camera or a dummy bell box, then match a backplate to the cover or range you already use.

Dummy cameras

The Mercury 351.081UK is a plastic dummy dome camera with one flashing red LED and an on/off switch worked by pressing the dome; it takes 2 x AA batteries, not supplied, and fixing screws are supplied. The 351.082UK is a plastic dummy bullet camera with a flashing infrared LED, a mock cable and a fully adjustable bracket, for indoor and outdoor use; a fixing kit and CCTV window sticker are supplied, and it needs 2 x AA alkaline batteries, not supplied.

Texecom Odyssey decoys

With no electronics fitted, the FCB-0049 is the Odyssey 2 back, while the FCD-0269 takes Odyssey 4 lids and the FCE-0033 takes Odyssey 5 lids. The FCA-0060 for the Odyssey 1 is the backplate only, so its cover is ordered separately. The FCF-0080 is the Odyssey 5 Compact dummy back, the FCD-0277 has a red lens, and the FCD-0282 is an Odyssey 4 dummy bellbox in white with a blue lens.

Deltabell and siren backplates

The Pyronix DELTA-BDA, DELTA-BDB, DELTA-BDBK, DELTA-BDG and DELTA-BDR are Deltabell backplates in amber, blue, black, green and red, each customisable with installer logos. The green DELTA-BDG is weather-resistant polycarbonate with an integrated levelling aid. The Eaton SDR-D-EXT-NC is a non-functional dummy backplate for external siren applications, suitable for outdoor installation.

Adding a flashing light

The Haydon HAY-2LEDMOD fits inside a dummy bell box to simulate an active alarm. Its two white LEDs flash alternately on a cycle of about 1.5 s and show through blue, red, yellow and green lenses. It runs from one 3V CR123A lithium cell, not included, with typical battery life of up to about three years, and fixes with the supplied adhesive pads.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dummy CCTV security camera?

A dummy CCTV security camera is a non-working replica built to look like a real camera and fitted as a visible deterrent. It records nothing and has no video connection, though some models carry a battery-powered flashing LED so they appear active. It is often used at lower-risk spots or alongside real cameras. The range here includes dummy dome and bullet cameras.

Are dummy cameras effective?

Yes, a dummy camera can put off some opportunist intruders, because a visible camera suggests the property is being watched. It cannot record evidence or send alerts, so it does nothing after a break-in, and an experienced intruder may spot a replica. Pairing it with a decoy bell box and good outside lighting can strengthen the effect. The range here includes dummy cameras and decoy bell boxes.

Are dummy cameras illegal?

No, fitting a dummy camera on your own property is not illegal in the UK. Because it captures no images, the data protection rules that apply to real CCTV do not usually come into play. Pointing one into a neighbour's garden or windows can still lead to disputes, so aim it at your own doors, drive or yard. Fitting it where a real camera would sit makes it more convincing.
