Pro Audio Processors & Accessories

Pro audio processors shape, split and manage a sound system's signal between the source, the mixer and the amplifiers. This page covers rack processors such as graphic equalisers, active crossovers, a compressor/limiter/gate, an enhancer and a speaker management system, and ControlSpace DSP and conferencing processors. Accessories include rack power distribution and conditioning, a USB audio interface, a turntable preamp and a scheduled messaging unit.

Choosing Pro Audio Processors & Accessories

Decide what the processor has to fix or control, then check that its inputs, outputs and rack size suit the rest of the system. Bose Professional and Citronic make most of the range.

EQ, crossovers and dynamics

Graphic equalisers adjust labelled frequency bands with faders: the 170.923UK (CEQ215) is a dual 15-band unit with up to 12dB of cut or boost from 25Hz to 16kHz in 1U, and the CEQ231 is a dual 31-band unit in 2U. Active crossovers send low frequencies to the sub amplifiers and mid/top frequencies to the top amplifiers: the 170.929UK (CX23) is 2-way stereo or 3-way mono with 18dB/octave Butterworth filters, and the 170.932UK (CX34) is 2 or 3-way stereo or 4-way mono with 24dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley filters. The 170.935UK (CL22) compressor/limiter/gate controls dynamic range and can protect loudspeakers, and the 170.938UK (CE22) enhancer/exciter adds harmonic content to dull-sounding audio.

DSP and speaker management

The 170.665UK speaker management system has 2 inputs and 6 outputs with crossovers, EQ and limiters on a 96kHz 32-bit floating point DSP. ControlSpace processors are open-architecture DSPs for installed systems: the 812862-2110 engineered sound processor has 8x8 analog I/O and an AmpLink output, and the 834317-2110 (EX-1280) has twelve mic/line inputs, eight outputs and 64 x 64 Dante connectivity. The 808453-2110 and 808456-2110 commercial sound processors are set up through an onboard CSP configuration utility and a browser interface.

Rack power and accessories

The 776.496UK and 776.498UK are 1U rack units with eight rear IEC outlets and 10A capacity with a circuit breaker; the 776.496UK adds a front IEC outlet and a digital voltmeter, and the 776.498UK an RFI/EMI filter. Other accessories include the 173.650UK USB audio interface with two XLR/jack microphone inputs and an instrument input, the 128.513UK turntable preamp, and the 953.053UK DM-8 messaging unit, which plays up to 99 scheduled events from an SD card.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a 15-band or a 31-band graphic equaliser?

Choose 31 bands when you need finer steps across the spectrum, and 15 bands for broader, quicker adjustment. The CEQ231 is a dual 31-band graphic equaliser in a 19in 2U space, and the 170.923UK (CEQ215) is a dual 15-band unit at 2/3 octave ISO spacing in 1U, with up to 12dB of cut or boost. The CEQ231 and 170.923UK each have a bypass switch, a low-cut switch and LED VU meters.

What does an active crossover do?

An active crossover splits the signal before the amplifiers, sending low frequencies to the amplifier driving the sub cabinets and mid/top frequencies to the amplifier driving the tops. The 170.929UK (CX23) is 2-way stereo or 3-way mono, and the 170.932UK (CX34) is 2 or 3-way stereo or 4-way mono. The 170.929UK and 170.932UK each have a 40Hz ultra-low frequency cut, a phase invert function and XLR connections.

What is a speaker management system?

A speaker management system is a DSP unit that combines crossovers, EQ and limiters so a designer can tailor the amplifier outputs to the speakers they drive. The 170.665UK has 2 inputs and 6 outputs, a 96kHz 32-bit floating point processor, 8-band EQ on inputs and outputs, and L-R, Bessel or Butterworth crossovers, controlled from the front panel, USB software or the network.

Which processors suit a conference room?

The Bose Professional ControlSpace EX conferencing processors are designed for meeting rooms. The 834315-2110 (EX-440C) has four mic/line inputs, 8-channel acoustic echo cancelling, VoIP, PSTN, USB and 16 x 16 Dante for small to medium rooms. The 772234-2110 (EX-1280C) has 12 acoustic echo cancellers, 2-line VoIP and 64 x 64 Dante, and one unit can support several rooms.

Do I need a power conditioner in an audio rack?

You need one where mains noise from lighting or dimmers reaches the audio. The 776.498UK filters RFI/EMI interference from sources such as fluorescent lights and certain dimmers, adds surge and voltage spike protection, and feeds 8 rear IEC outlets up to 10A through a circuit breaker. For simple power sharing, the 776.496UK distributor has surge protection and a digital voltmeter that shows the incoming line voltage.

Why does a turntable need a preamp?

A turntable with a magnetic cartridge gives a phono signal that must be raised to line level before it reaches an amplifier. The 128.513UK is a compact stereo preamp that does this to match the line or CD input of an amplifier. It runs from the included UK mains adaptor or a 9V battery, and has a grounding screw to cut noise.
