Outdoor Wall Lanterns

A PIR sensor detects the body heat of someone moving in front of it and switches the lantern on, then off again after a set time. The Knightsbridge LANT2, LANT4 and LANT4W detect up to 8m away across a 90° angle, and the LANT2 and LANT4 add a manual override so the light can be kept on.

The photocell models. The LANT1BKP wall lantern has a daylight sensor and the LANT3BKP half lantern a photocell sensor, so each switches itself by the light level rather than by movement. The LANT3BKP also has a manual override. They suit porches and entrances that should stay lit through the evening.

A half wall lantern is a lantern cut in half down its length, so its flat back sits against the wall and it projects less than a full lantern. The Knightsbridge LANT3, LANT3BKP, LANT3W, LANT4 and LANT4W are 8W LED half lanterns giving 440lm, the LANT3 with a frosted diffuser for even light.

A coach lantern is the traditional glazed, multi-panel style once hung beside carriage doors. The Knightsbridge TORODO and TOROUP are four-panel coach lanterns in black polycarbonate, rated IP44, with an 8W LED and a colour temperature adjustable between 3000K and 4000K. Knightsbridge describes them as corrosion resistant and suited to coastal areas.

Look for IP44 or higher on a wall open to the rain, and IP54 where dust is a concern as well. The LANT1 to LANT4W lanterns are IP54, protected against dust and splashing water, and the TORODO and TOROUP coach lanterns IP44. The LANTSS is IP23, protected against dripping water, so it and the LANTBK belong under a porch roof or canopy.

Yes, with the LANTBK or LANTSS. The LANTBK and LANTSS each take an E27 lamp of up to 40W and are LED compatible, and the LANTSS is supplied without a lamp. The LANT lanterns have a built-in 8W LED instead; the LANT1 and LANT1W list the lamp as included.

The LANT lanterns give cool white light, a clear white that shows faces and keyholes well at a door; the LANT1, LANT1W, LANT2, LANT2W, LANT3BKP, LANT3W, LANT4 and LANT4W state 4000K. The TORODO and TOROUP coach lanterns let you choose 3000K for a warmer look or 4000K. With the LANTBK and LANTSS, the colour depends on the E27 lamp you fit.

Between 400lm and 555lm here, depending on the model. The LANT1 and LANT2 give 400lm, the LANT1BKP, LANT1W and LANT2W 555lm, and the half lanterns LANT3, LANT3BKP, LANT3W, LANT4 and LANT4W 440lm. That is plenty for a doorway or porch; for a driveway, a floodlight suits better.

The TORODO and TOROUP coach lanterns, which Knightsbridge describes as corrosion resistant and ideal for coastal areas, with a polycarbonate body. The LANT1BKP, LANT1W, LANT2, LANT3BKP, LANT3W and LANT4W are also polycarbonate and described as corrosion resistant, which helps where salt air attacks metal fittings.
