Outdoor Switches

A weatherproof switch is a switch built for outdoor or damp locations, with a sealed housing and usually a cover that keeps water and dust off the contacts. It controls outdoor lights, garden power or equipment. Check its IP rating and whether it suits an exposed or a sheltered position. The range here includes weatherproof switches, a switch with a socket and a photocell switch.

An outdoor light switch should typically be rated at least IP44, with a higher rating where it is more exposed to rain. The first digit rates protection against dust and solids, the second against water. Keep the cover closed and fit cable glands properly so the rating holds. The range here includes IP55 and IP66 rated switches.

An outdoor light timer switch turns lights on and leaves them on for a set period before switching them off. A photocell timer switch senses dusk, switches the lights on as it gets dark and turns them off after the hours you choose, so they do not stay on through the night. The range here includes a photocell switch with selectable timer settings.

Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and prove it dead. Fit a sealed gland or grommet where the cable enters the switch, then connect it to the switch terminals. Refit the cover and seals so the IP rating is kept, and check that the circuit has RCD protection. If you are unsure, use a qualified electrician.
