Access Control Smart Readers
Smart readers are the access control readers that read a user's card, fob, PIN or phone credential at a door, after which the control unit grants or denies access. This page covers card and keypad readers, mullion readers, Bluetooth and mobile-credential readers, OSDP and Wiegand readers, and biometric readers, from makers including HID Global, Honeywell Commercial Security, TDSi and Acre.

Choosing Access Control Smart Readers
Choose by the cards already in use on site, then by how the reader is wired to the controller, then by where it is mounted.
Card technology
The Acre AQ-SWB-1040 and AQ-SOB-1040 AQ40 readers read 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz cards. The TDSi 5002-0630 GARDiS reader is built on the MIFARE smart card platform and is compatible with ISO 14443-A at 13.56 MHz. The Comelit PAC 909020118 Oneprox GS3 HF vandal reader uses the MIFARE and DESFire EV1 reading protocols. With its standard profile, the HID Signo 20 terminal strip reader 20TKS-00-00003U reads Seos, iCLASS and MIFARE cards as well as 125 kHz HID, Indala and EM4102 proximity.
Wiegand, RS-485 and OSDP wiring
The AQ-SWB-1040 has a Wiegand output and the AQ-SOB-1040 an OSDP output. On the Signo 20 terminal strip reader, terminals 3 and 4 are wired as Wiegand Data 1 and Data 0, or as the A and B lines of RS-485 for OSDP, depending on the reader configuration. The Kantech KT-SG-SC2 communicates over RS-485, Wiegand and OSDP, and outputs a 56-bit CSN/UID over OSDP.
Phones and Bluetooth
The Paxton 010-296 slimline reader has three Bluetooth operating modes for smart credentials: token, touch-to-enter and long range. The Axis Communications 03072-001, the AXIS A4612 network Bluetooth reader, gives access via a cell phone and takes power and connectivity from the nearest network switch over a single PoE cable.
Outdoor doors
The Paxton 010-296 is externally rated to IK10 and IP67. The Dahua ASR2200AB has a tempered glass panel and an IP66 rating for indoor or outdoor use.

Frequently asked questions
Which smart readers can unlock by Bluetooth?
Look for a reader with built-in Bluetooth, which lets a smartphone or other smart device be used as the credential. The Dahua ASR2200AB unlocks by card swiping or Bluetooth and reads Mifare cards, and the Hikvision DS-K1105EMKB-QR supports card, PIN and Bluetooth authentication, including door opening with a wave of the hand. The Paxton 010-296 has three Bluetooth modes: token, touch-to-enter and long range.
What is a DESFire reader?
It is an access control reader that reads MIFARE DESFire cards and tokens, in some cases by their card serial number (CSN) alone. The HID 20XTKK-X2-000000 Signo 20 reads MIFARE and DESFire CSN, and the Kantech KT-SG-SC2 reads Mifare Desfire and Desfire EV1 as a 32-bit CSN/UID. The Comelit PAC 909020118 Oneprox GS3 HF vandal reader uses the MIFARE and DESFire EV1 reading protocols.
Can a smart reader be set up from a smartphone?
Yes, some smart readers can be fully configured with the maker's smartphone app. The HID 20XTKK-X2-000000 Signo 20 reader, which has a BLE module and a Wiegand interface with screw terminal, is configured with the HID Reader Manager app. It reads MIFARE and DESFire CSN, HID Mobile IDs over BLE or NFC and HID Seos, and its connection voltage is 12V DC at 250 mA.
What is a biometric card reader?
It is a reader that checks a face or fingerprint and can combine it with a card or other credential for multi-factor authentication. The HID VL35LF-000-0000 Amico uses facial recognition and supports face, credential (HF/LF), HID Mobile Access, QR code and PIN, which can be combined for multi-factor authentication. The CDVI IEVO-HIDDR lets HID credentials be used with ievo fingerprint readers.
Can I move from Wiegand to OSDP without rewiring?
Yes, readers with OSDP Autodetect can migrate a Wiegand installation to OSDP over the existing wiring. The Acre MT10S-I and MT15S-I Gen2 multi-tech mullion readers have OSDP V2.2 verification and OSDP Autodetect, with OSDP and Wiegand capability, and install with a terminal connector and an included pigtail. The MT15S-I adds a keypad, and both read 13.56 MHz NFC, 125 kHz prox and Bluetooth BLE 5.3 credentials.
