Fire alarm accessories and components are the parts around the panel and detectors: detector and sounder bases, loop interface and relay modules, EN54-4 power supplies and standby batteries, panel spares such as network cards, printers and enclosures, and pipework for aspirating smoke detection. Start from the installed system: many parts here are made for one maker's panel, protocol or detector range.

Bases and interface modules

A detector base has to suit the detector and the loop: the Apollo 45681-284APO XPERT 7 base isolates short circuits on XP95 and Discovery loops, and the C-TEC C4408D diode base gives 'head out' end-of-line monitoring with ActiV detectors. Interface modules connect other equipment to the fire system; the Apollo SA4700-104APO twin I/O module has two independent channels in one enclosure, and the Nittan EV-3IO has three inputs and three relay outputs.

Power supplies and batteries

Look for EN54-4 certification on a fire alarm power supply. The ESP BPS2EN and BPS5EN are 2A and 5A EN54-4 units supplied without batteries, and the Haydon HAY-PSUEN54-5A gives 27.6 V DC at 5 A with a built-in charger. Batteries include the ESP BAT18, a 12V 17.0Ah sealed lead acid battery, and Ajax EN54 Li-ion packs such as the 127878.324.WH.

Panel spares, sampling pipework and cable fixings

Panel parts such as the Morley-IAS 795-099 network card for DXc panels and the Advanced MXP-512 printer for MxPro 5 panels fit one panel family. For aspirating smoke detection the pipe, fittings and sampling points come separately, such as the Airsense 9-10900 27mm x 3m ABS pipe and the Xtralis PIP-024 end-of-line valve; the Kidde FDD710LP is a 1.5m extra-long sampling pipe for the FDD710 duct detector. Linear heat sensor cable is held by Kidde ACA-CE edge clips on steelwork and by ACA-TW cable ties on LHD brackets.

What is a fire alarm isolation switch for?

It isolates the mains supply to a fire panel or mains-powered fire equipment so the system can be worked on safely. The Haydon HAY-FIRE-ISO is a double-pole switch fused at F4A that isolates live and neutral, and the Zeta 400-210R is key-operated, with the key removable in the on and off positions and a neon to show mains is present. The Vimpex VMIS-W switches live and neutral in a single-gang enclosure.

What goes in a fire alarm document box?

A fire document box keeps fire-safety paperwork in one fixed, clearly marked place, such as the fire risk assessment, evacuation plans, site drawings and the system log book. The Haydon HAY-DOCBOX-FR is a red A4 steel box, 314 × 250 × 68 mm, with two keys. The MAG MAGLB log book holds test procedures and service records kept in line with BS5839-1.

What does a loop isolator do on an addressable fire alarm?

A loop isolator cuts out a short-circuited section of an addressable loop so the rest of the loop keeps working. Isolators come as bases, such as the Hochiki YBO-R/SCI, which shows an amber LED while isolating, or as modules, such as the ESP MAGPRO-iM, which resets itself after a short and allows a maximum of 30 devices between two isolators. Some I/O modules, such as the C-TEC CA734, also carry an onboard loop isolator.

How are fire door holders connected to the alarm?

Door holders such as the ESP DR916-24 (24V DC) and DR916-240 (240V AC) hold a door open and are released by the fire system, usually through a relay or I/O module. The Nittan EV-3IO has a failsafe option for door release, and the Haydon HAY-FIRE-24R relay can drive door releases. The DR916 holders have zero residual force, and there is a floor mounting bracket and a spare keeper plate.

How do I set the address on an addressable fire device?

Use the programmer or address card made for that system. The Hochiki TCH-B200 hand-held programmer addresses ESP sensors, wall sounders, minimodules and call points, the last with a programming lead sold separately, and runs for up to 8000 operations on a PP3 battery. Apollo XPERT bases take address cards such as the 45682-800APO pack of 25, and the ESP MAGPRO-PROG has a built-in MAGPRO-DB base with its programming cable included.

Are there fire alarm accessories for people who are deaf or hard of hearing?

Yes, the Aico Ei171RF RadioLINK strobe and the Ei174 vibrating pillow pad. The Ei171RF is a mains-powered Xenon strobe with a rechargeable battery backup that gives a visual warning when an alarm triggers anywhere in a RadioLINK system. The Ei174 connects to it on a 5-metre cable and gives pulsed vibrations, so a person is alerted while sleeping.
