Beam Smoke Detectors
Beam smoke detectors protect large open areas such as warehouses and atriums by projecting an optical beam across the space and raising a fire alarm when smoke reduces it, the method EN 54-12 covers. The range covers reflective beam detectors, auto-aligning and addressable models, and OSID imaging systems with their emitters and parts. Brands include Xtralis by Honeywell, Kidde, Apollo Fire, Eaton and System Sensor.

Choosing Beam Smoke Detectors
Choose by the type of beam, reflective or OSID, then by the distance to be covered and by how the detector connects to the fire alarm system.
Reflective beam detectors
The Eaton EF-CBD130 is EN54-12 certified, with long-range beam detection for wide or high-ceiling spaces. The System Sensor 6500E-26 has a servo-operated test filter. The Kidde FD2705R has an area coverage of up to 600 m², and the Kidde FD2710R works up to ceiling heights of 25 m with low current consumption.
Auto-aligning beam detector
The Apollo Fire SA7100-100APO automatically compensates for environmental effects on the beam signal, through the combination of software (automatic gain control) and motorised realignment of the beam. Its features include building movement and contamination compensation.
OSID detectors and emitters
The Xtralis by Honeywell OSI-10 and OSI-90 detectors have a CMOS imager with wide viewing angles, an on-board log memory and high resistance to dust, fogging, steam, reflections and object intrusion. The OSE-HPW emitter is part of a system with an on-board event log for fault and alarm diagnostics and a high tolerance to false alarm due to building movement.
OSID installation kit
The Xtralis by Honeywell OSID-INST installation kit is used in commissioning and maintaining the correct operation of the OSID smoke detector. The kit includes the OSID laser alignment tool with three LR44 button cell batteries pre-installed, a smoke simulating test filter, a cleaning cloth and a serial PC interface cable.

Frequently asked questions
What is a reflective beam detector?
It is a beam detector that has its transmitter and receiver in one unit and works with a reflector. The System Sensor 6500E-26 is supplied as a combined transmitter/receiver unit with reflector, and the Eaton EF-CBD130 uses reflective optical technology in a single-ended design for easier installation. The Apollo Fire SA7100-100APO combines a transmitter/receiver in the same detector head with an automatic alignment motor.
What distance does an optical beam detector cover?
The distance is set by the model. The System Sensor 6500E-26 is suitable for distances from 10m to 100m, and a detector head on the Apollo Fire SA7100-100APO is configurable from 8m to 100m. The Xtralis by Honeywell OSI-10 covers a distance of 30 - 150m with the OSE-SPW emitter, in a configuration for a 1 on 1 system that is not suitable to work with high powered emitters.
What is an OSID smoke detector?
It is an Open-area Smoke Imaging Detection system, made up of an imager and an emitter. In its simplest configuration, the OSID system of the Xtralis by Honeywell OSI-10 uses one imager, a camera-like device with a wide field of view, and a wired or battery-powered emitter roughly aligned on the opposite wall within the protected area. The emitter sends infrared and ultraviolet coded light signals to the imager, and if the light reception is altered due to the presence of genuine smoke particles, the imager will go into alarm.
What is an addressable beam detector?
An addressable beam detector sits on an addressable fire alarm loop, so the panel identifies its signals individually, as BS 5839-1 defines for addressable systems. Addressable models include the System Sensor 6500E-26, the Kidde FD2705R and FD2710R, which are integral, loop powered analogue addressable reflective beam detectors, and the Apollo Fire SA7100-100APO with integrated addressability. The Eaton EF-CBD130, by contrast, is a conventional beam detector that integrates with standard fire alarm panels.
What makes a beam detector easier to install and commission?
Automatic alignment on one model and a commissioning kit for the OSID system. The Apollo Fire SA7100-100APO has an automatic alignment motor in the detector head. The Xtralis by Honeywell OSID-INST kit provides a commissioning aid (reflector) that is attached to the opposing unit that is not being aligned, so that light returning from the laser alignment tool is brighter. The OSE-HPW emitter gives easy alignment with large adjustment and viewing angles.
