Ethernet & Network Sockets

Ethernet and network sockets bring a wired data or telephone connection out at a wall plate. Choosing Ethernet & Network Sockets

Decide what the point carries, data or a phone line, then pick a one-piece outlet or a modular plate that takes separate euro modules. Knightsbridge makes most of the outlets and modules here, and Connectix the compact data modules and euro faceplates.

RJ45 network outlets

Most Knightsbridge RJ45 outlets here are single shuttered UTP Cat5e points with IDC terminals and a write-on designation label, certified to BS 5733 and needing a mounting box at least 35mm deep. Finishes include brushed chrome (CL45BC, SFRJ45BC), brushed brass (FPRJ45BB), antique brass (SFRJ45AB) and black nickel (SFRJ45BN). The MRJ45 is a metal clad outlet in powder-coated silver with its own back box, rated IP20.

Telephone sockets

A master socket is the main BT-type point on the line, and a secondary or extension socket runs further points from it. Knightsbridge makes the FP7300PB (polished brass) and FP7300PL (pearl) ultralow profile master outlets and the CL74BC (brushed chrome) and SF7400MW (matt white, screwless) extension sockets, each needing a 25mm mounting box; the FP7300PB, FP7300PL and CL74BC have screw terminals.

Euro modules and modular plates

The Knightsbridge euro modules measure 25 x 50mm and fit a modular faceplate. They include the NETCAT5GY Cat5e and NETCAT6WH Cat6 RJ45 modules, the NETBTMWH master and NETBTSWH secondary telephone modules and the NETRJ11WH RJ11 module. The FPF4GMW floor plate takes four 25 x 50mm or two 50 x 50mm modules and is 16.2mm deep. Connectix Cat5e and Cat6 compact modules, such as the 008-000-001-20, are made for positions where back-box depth is a problem and fit single or dual gang euro faceplates.

What types of phone socket are there?

Phone sockets come in two main types: master sockets and secondary sockets. The master is the first point where the incoming line meets the home wiring, and secondaries, often called extension sockets, branch off it to add phone points in other rooms. A modular faceplate can also take telephone master and secondary euro modules. The range here includes master outlets, extension sockets and telephone euro modules.

How do I connect an ethernet cable to a wall socket?

Push the RJ45 plug on the patch lead into the wall socket until the latch clicks, then plug the other end into your computer, TV or other device. The wall socket is already wired to a cable run behind the plate, which should end at a router, switch or patch panel. If no link light appears, check that the far end of that run is connected.

How do I wire an ethernet socket?

Terminate the cable on the socket's IDC terminals with a punch-down tool, following the colour code marked on the socket. Strip back the sheath, keep the pair twists close to the terminals, and press the conductors fully home. Use the same wiring scheme at the other end of the run, then test the link with a cable tester. Some outlets come with an IDC tool in the box.
