Bulkhead Emergency Lights

A bulkhead emergency light is a sealed wall or ceiling fitting that lights from its own battery when the mains supply fails, so an escape route, stair or exit stays visible. This range has small dedicated emergency bulkheads from Knightsbridge and Duceri, and everyday LED bulkheads with a built-in emergency function, several with a microwave sensor and most rated IP65 for damp or outdoor positions.

Choosing Bulkhead Emergency Lights

First decide whether the fitting is purely for emergencies or should also give everyday light.

Dedicated emergency bulkheads

The Knightsbridge EMLED3L (4W, 175 lumens) and EMLED4L (3W) give at least 3 hours of emergency light from a LiFePO4 battery; each comes with a self-adhesive legend kit. The Duceri D1011WH is a 5W IP65 bulkhead, and the D2000SWH a 4W IP20 flush bulkhead with switchable self-test for dry indoor positions.

Everyday bulkheads with emergency built in

For corridors, stairs and workplaces that need light daily, the BT EVO BTEVCFEM and BTEVMWEM switch between 9W, 14W and 18W and three colour temperatures, and are rated IP65 and IK10. The BT20ACTEMS is a 20W CCT bulkhead with maintained emergency and a microwave sensor, and the TPR14LEDEM a 14W, 1100lm fitting with a 3-hour emergency duration. The Duceri D1020WH and D1620WH are 14W circular bulkheads with CCT, the D1620WH adding a microwave sensor.

Maintained or non-maintained

A maintained fitting works as a normal light and carries on from its battery in a power cut; a non-maintained one stays dark until the mains fails. The EMLED3L, EMLED4L, D1011WH, D1020WH, D1620WH and D2000SWH can be set up either way.

What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lights?

A maintained emergency light works as a normal light and stays lit from its battery when the power fails. A non-maintained light is off while the mains is healthy and comes on when the power fails. The Knightsbridge EMLED3L and EMLED4L and the Duceri D1011WH, D1020WH, D1620WH and D2000SWH can be configured for either mode.

How long does an emergency bulkhead stay lit in a power cut?

Three hours is the figure these fittings quote. The Knightsbridge EMLED3L and EMLED4L give a minimum of 3 hours of emergency illumination, and the TPR14LEDEM has a 3-hour emergency duration. Check the stated duration on any fitting chosen for an escape route, and test it after installation.

What is a self-test emergency light?

A self-test emergency light checks its own lamp, battery and charging on a schedule and signals a fault, which cuts the routine manual testing. The Duceri D2000SWH is a 4W flush bulkhead with switchable self-test, and the Duceri models show charging with a green LED indicator, so a fault is visible at a glance.

Can an emergency bulkhead be fitted outdoors?

Yes, if it is rated for outdoor use. The Knightsbridge EMLED3L and EMLED4L are IP65 and suit indoor and outdoor positions, and the BTEVMWEM is IP65 with a UV-stabilised body for long life outdoors. The BF2440EMS is IP44 for indoor and outdoor use. The Duceri D2000SWH is IP20, so keep it to dry indoor positions.

Can an emergency bulkhead also run on a motion sensor?

Yes. The BTEVMWEM has a fully adjustable microwave sensor, the BT20ACTEMS a microwave sensor with adjustable detection, lux level and hold time, and the Duceri D1620WH a microwave sensor. The BT20ACTEMS and BTEVMWEM also have a slave live terminal, so they can switch additional non-sensor luminaires on the same circuit.

What battery do these emergency bulkheads use?

Where the battery is stated, it is lithium. The EMLED3L, EMLED4L and BTEVMWEM use a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, the Duceri D1020WH and D1620WH a 3.2V 1500mAh LiFePO4 cell, and the D1011WH and D2000SWH a lithium battery with charge and discharge protection and a green charging indicator.

Can the colour temperature be set on an emergency bulkhead?

On the adjustable models, yes. The BT20ACTEMS, BTEVCFEM and BTEVMWEM offer 3000K, 4000K or 5700K, and the Duceri D1020WH and D1620WH are CCT fittings. Others are fixed: the TPR14LEDEM is 4000K cool white and the BF2440EMS 6000K daylight, a whiter and bluer light.

Which emergency bulkhead stands up to impact?

The BT EVO BTEVCFEM and BTEVMWEM, rated IK10, the highest impact rating in common use, as well as IP65. Knightsbridge describes the BT EVO for commercial and industrial spaces indoors and outdoors, and the BTEVMWEM has a UV-stabilised body. The BTEVCFEM and BTEVMWEM switch between 9W, 14W and 18W and between three colour temperatures.

Can an emergency bulkhead show an exit legend?

Yes, the Knightsbridge EMLED3L and EMLED4L each come with a self-adhesive legend kit as standard. The EMLED3L and EMLED4L are IP65 bulkheads that give at least 3 hours of emergency light and can be set up as maintained or non-maintained, so one fitting can light an exit route and mark it.
