Telephone Entry Systems

Telephone entry systems connect a visitor at an entrance panel to a handset or phone inside, from which the door lock can be released. The range covers audio and digital entrance panels, coded keypads, vandal resistant stainless steel panels, telephone handsets, and the controllers and modules behind them. Brands include Videx, Bell System, BPT, Aiphone and Comelit PAC.

Choosing Telephone Entry Systems

Start with the entrance panel the visitor uses, then add the controllers and modules the system needs.

Vandal resistant panels

The Bell System LCP8 and LCP9 are flush mount panels laser cut from 2.5mm 316 marine grade stainless steel, leaving a gap of just 0.3mm that rejects implements that could be used to force the panel from its box. The Bell System VRP4 is fixed to its back-box with tamper proof bolts. The Comelit VK4199/08 is a BS316 stainless steel vandal resistant panel with a cut out for a proximity reader, suitable for external use. The Videx VR120/136-5 has IP68 rated buttons with an optional yellow bezel for DDA requirements.

Keypads and digital calling

The BPT HAC/200 has a backlit alpha numeric keypad for digital calling and coded key access control, and a graphic display for choosing apartments from a list. The Comelit PAC 3360B digital call module has a keypad with 21 buttons backlit with blue LEDs, and for the SBC system its electronic directory saves up to 3500 users and 6000 lock-release passwords.

Name buttons and lighting

The BPT HSC/6DST and HSC/8DST are surface Targha audio panels with LED lit nameplates, and both can be expanded with more call buttons. On the Bell System SPA4 and SPA6, optional backlighting is added by fitting a model SPA-LAMP lamp unit to each push-button, and the panels require a 61 speech unit.

Controllers, cabling and isolation

The Bell System BFD-DIG audio/video digital panel controller uses Cat5 cable throughout, with no co-ax required. The Urmet 788/51 can manage 2 audio/video outdoor stations and has 5 switches for conversation privacy. The Videx 316I is a 4 way apartment isolation card: if a fault occurs within an apartment, only that apartment is affected and the remaining apartments function as normal.

Frequently asked questions

How does a telephone entry system work?

A visitor presses a call button on the entrance panel, speaks to the person who answers on a handset or phone, and that person releases the door lock. On the Videx VR120/136-5 entrance panel, SPEAK, BUSY and DOOR OPEN call progress LEDs and reassurance tones assist the visitor. The Videx 3181 audiophone has a telephone handset with a lock release button, and the Urmet 1148/1 connects an entry panel directly to an analog input of a PBX.

Can Cat5 cable replace coax between the panel and controller?

Yes, on door entry systems built for Cat5, the panel and controller connect over Cat5 cable, so no coax is needed. The Bell System BFD-DIG audio/video digital panel controller uses Cat5 cable throughout, so no co-ax is required. The Bell System BFD1 panel controller connects a door panel to the CAT5 distribution network and provides all inputs and outputs to the door and panel.

What does a door entry keypad do?

A door entry keypad lets a user enter a code to release the door, and on digital panels it can also be used to call an apartment. The Bell System CP106-1 is a 1 button surface mount audio panel with a C106 coded keypad. The BPT HAC/200 has a backlit alpha numeric keypad for digital calling and coded key access control, and the Videx VR4KCLM/NFP code lock module has 2 programmable secret codes, one for each relay.

Which entry panels are built to resist vandalism?

Vandal resistant entry panels resist forcing with heavy-gauge stainless steel or aluminium plates, close-fitting faceplates and tamper proof or anti-vandal fixings. The Bell System LCP8 and LCP9 leave a gap of just 0.3mm around their removable plate, rejecting implements that could force the panel from its box, and the VRP9 is fixed to its back-box with tamper proof bolts. The Videx VR120/136-2 faceplates attach to the back box with 4 or 6 anti-vandal fixings.

Can one entry system link several buildings?

Yes, with a building-to-building network adaptor that lets several door entry systems communicate across one network. The Aiphone GT-MCX lets multiple GT Series systems communicate across a single, logical network, with a single 10/100 Ethernet port, and allows a maximum of 480 entrances, 96 guard stations and 5,000 tenants. The Aiphone GT-BCXB-N audio control unit is fitted 1 per system when using more than 5 entrances, 2 concierge stations or 48 tenant stations.
