Commando & Industrial Sockets

Commando fittings are the industrial plugs and connectors used to power workshop equipment, generators and commercial appliances in tough conditions. This collection holds Knightsbridge commando plugs, connectors and an appliance inlet, every one rated IP44. They come in 16A and 32A ratings and are colour-coded by voltage: yellow and white for the 110V IN002 connector, blue and white for 240V fittings such as the IN006 plug, and red and white for the 415V IN0014 and IN0016 plugs.

Choosing Commando & Industrial Sockets

Choose a commando fitting by the supply voltage, the current rating and whether it goes on a lead or in a fixed position.

Voltage and colour

The housing colour tells you which supply a fitting is made for. The IN002 connector is 110V in yellow and white; the IN0011, IN006, IN0022 and IN0023 are 240V in blue and white; the IN0014 and IN0016 plugs are 415V in red and white. Pair a plug with a connector or socket of the same voltage and rating.

Current rating and pins

The 16A fittings here are the IN002 connector and the IN006 and IN0014 plugs. The IN0011 and IN0016 plugs, the IN0023 connector and the IN0022 inlet are rated 32A. The IN0011, IN002, IN0023 and IN006 are 2P+E, two poles plus earth, while the 415V IN0014 plug is 3P+N+E, three poles with neutral and earth.

Plug, connector or appliance inlet

Plugs such as the IN006 fit on the lead of the equipment being powered, and connectors such as the IN0023 go on a cable to make the connection with a plug. The IN0022 appliance inlet is effectively a wall-mounted plug in a fixed position, for 240V 32A appliances such as generators, workshop equipment, caravan power and mobile catering.

Weather protection

Every fitting here is rated IP44. Knightsbridge describes the IN0011 plug for indoor and outdoor applications and the IN0022 inlet for indoor or outdoor use and harsh environments.

Frequently asked questions

What do the colours on commando plugs mean?

The colour marks the supply voltage the fitting is made for. In this collection the yellow and white IN002 connector is 110V, blue and white fittings such as the IN006 plug and IN0022 inlet are 240V, and the red and white IN0014 and IN0016 plugs are 415V. Match the colour and rating of a plug to the socket or connector it will go into.

Should I choose a 16A or a 32A commando plug?

Choose the rating that covers what the equipment draws and that matches the socket it will plug into. The 16A fittings here are the IN002 connector and the IN006 and IN0014 plugs. The 32A fittings are the IN0011 and IN0016 plugs, the IN0023 connector and the IN0022 appliance inlet. Check the rating plate on the equipment before you choose.

What is an appliance inlet?

An appliance inlet is a plug built into a fixed position rather than fitted to a lead. Knightsbridge describes the IN0022 as effectively a fixed position wall mounting plug, IP44 rated for indoor or outdoor use and harsh environments, for 240V 32A appliances including generators, equipment in workshops, caravan power, mobile catering and commercial appliances.

Can commando plugs be used outdoors?

Yes, every fitting here is rated IP44 for protection against splashing water. Knightsbridge describes the IN0011 plug as suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and the IN0022 inlet for indoor or outdoor use and harsh environments, and the IN002 and IN0023 descriptions add protection against dust. Check the protection a location needs before you choose a fitting for it.

What do 2P+E and 3P+N+E mean on an industrial plug?

They describe the pin configuration. 2P+E means two poles plus earth, as on the 110V IN002 connector and 240V fittings such as the IN006, IN0011 and IN0023; 3P+N+E means three poles, neutral and earth, as on the 415V IN0014 plug. Match the configuration and voltage of a plug to the connector or socket it will go into.

What is a commando plug?

A commando plug is a heavy-duty industrial plug that connects equipment to a matching industrial socket or connector. Knightsbridge plugs in this collection include the IN006, a 240V 16A plug in blue and white, the IN0011, a 240V 32A plug with an earth terminal, and the IN0014, a 415V 16A plug. They are IP44 rated, which gives the IN0014 protection against water and solid objects.
