CCTV Poles & Columns

The Altron CCTV columns here are steel columns that lift cameras to height, with the anti-climb frames, ladder stay and winch that go with them, plus extension pipes that set a camera away from its mounting surface. Columns include the 4.5m ACC1BPLA and ACC1PM/LA, the 6m ACC2PMLA and ACC2BPLA, and the 7.5m ACC3BP and ACC3FBLA, in tilt-down and fixed-base designs.

Choosing CCTV Poles & Columns

Choose the height the cameras need first, then how the column will be serviced and how it fixes to its foundation.

Height and duty

The Altron columns here run from 4.5m to 7.5m. The ACC1BPLA and ACC1PM/LA are 4.5m, the ACC2PMLA and ACC2BPLA 6m, and the ACC3BP and ACC3FBLA 7.5m. The ACC1BPLA is rated light/medium duty, with a maximum equipment weight of about 35 kg.

Tilt-down or fixed

A tilt-down column lowers its top section and cameras to ground level for maintenance, which reduces working at height. The ACC1PM/LA has a demountable tilt winch with supplied wire rope and a padlockable tilt-down lock, and the DW1500AC is a demountable winch kit for 7.5m ACC3 BP/PM tilt-down installations. The ACC3FBLA is a fixed-base column for permanent installations, designed to recognised standards including ILE TR7, BS 6399 and BS 8100.

Fixing and construction

Post-mount columns such as the ACC2PMLA are set into a concrete foundation, while the ACC3BP bolts down to a concrete foundation through a 140 × 140 base plate. The Altron columns here are hot-dip galvanised after fabrication for corrosion resistance. The foundation template for the ACC1BPLA and ACC3FBLA is sold separately, so order it with the column.

Anti-climb, ladder access and extension pipes

Anti-climb frames help prevent unauthorised access up a column: the SGC2 fits ACC2 columns and the SGC4 ACC4 columns, both in hot dip galvanised high tensile steel with grade A2 stainless steel fixing bolts. The LS1 ladder stay holds an extension ladder away from a column or pole so installers can climb safely. At the camera end, Axis extension pipes such as the 03269-001 have a 1.5" NPS thread and a powder-coated aluminium body.

Frequently asked questions

How does a tilt-down CCTV column work?

It is a column whose top section, with the cameras on it, lowers to ground level for maintenance, so routine servicing avoids working at height. The Altron ACC1BPLA has a winch-operated tilt-down top section with a padlock facility, and the ACC2PMLA has an internal padlock facility to prevent unauthorised lowering.

What heights do the CCTV columns come in?

The Altron columns here come in 4.5m, 6m and 7.5m heights. The ACC1BPLA and ACC1PM/LA are 4.5m, the ACC2PMLA and ACC2BPLA are 6m, and the ACC3BP and ACC3FBLA are 7.5m. Pick the height that gives the cameras the view they need, then check the payload the column is rated for.

How is a CCTV column fixed to the ground?

Through a concrete foundation, by root or bolts: post-mount columns such as the ACC2PMLA are set into concrete, and the ACC3BP bolts down to a concrete foundation, commonly with an M24 × 425 bolt kit. The ACC3FBLA fixed-base column also bolts to concrete, and its foundation template, such as the T&B510, is ordered separately.

How do I stop people climbing a CCTV column?

Fit an anti-climb frame made for the column: the Altron SGC2 fits ACC2 columns and the SGC4 fits ACC4 columns. The SGC2 and SGC4 are both high tensile steel, hot dip galvanised, with fixing bolts of grade A2 stainless steel, and the SGC2 is intended to prevent unauthorised access.

Does a tilt-down column need a winch?

Yes, a winch lowers the column, and on some models it is a separate item. The Altron DW1500AC is a demountable winch kit for 7.5m ACC3 BP/PM tilt-down installations, and for the ACC2PMLA the winch and foundation template or bolts are commonly supplied separately. The ACC1PM/LA has a demountable tilt winch with supplied wire rope.

What is a camera extension pipe for?

It extends the distance between a surveillance camera and its mounting surface, whether a ceiling, wall or pole. The Axis extension pipes here, such as the 03268-001, mount horizontally or vertically, are powder-coated aluminium for indoor and outdoor use, and have a 1.5" NPS thread to attach to mounting brackets or junction boxes.
