Access Control Power Supplies
Access control power supplies provide the DC or AC power for door locks and controllers, and include boxed units with standby battery backup and power controllers with fire alarm interfaces. The range also has rack-mounted supplies and enclosures that house door controllers as well as powering them. Brands include Dantech Electronic Engineering, Altronix, Videx, BPT, Haydon and RGL Electronics.

Choosing Access Control Power Supplies
Choose by what the supply must power and house, then by battery, voltage and fire alarm link.
Battery backup
The STP STP-PSU2A-12 and STP-PSU3A-12 boxed supplies provide a 12Vdc output for maglocks or electric releases, and keep power running through a mains failure when fitted with an optional lead-acid battery, which is not included. The Dantech DA448/XSM houses and charges two 12V 7Ah VRLA batteries. The Dantech DA774 houses one VRLA battery of up to 17Ah.
Fire alarm interface
On the Altronix AL1024ACMCB220 and EFLOW6NA8DV the fire alarm disconnect is individually selectable for any or all of their eight outputs. The Haydon HAY-ACCESS12V5A-4W has 4-way fused, switchable fire-interface outputs, and the Dantech DA482 has user-selectable fire alarm switching of its lock outputs. The Elmdene TR2 can switch off its output on a signal from the fire panel, for example where it powers magnetic door retainers.
Housing door controllers
The Dantech DA482 mounts four controllers and has a built-in 12V DC battery backed supply, with a 500mA PCB output and a 2A lock output for each PCB position. The Acre ACCESS-UL-PSU1-ENC houses up to 2 small or 1 mid-sized door controller, and the Acre ACCESS-UL-PSU2-ENC up to 4 small or 2 mid-sized. The Axis 03335-002 is an access control enclosure with a 150W power supply and battery backup for the AXIS A1710-B Door Controller.
Output voltage and PoE
The Dantech DA448/XSM changes from a 12V to a 24V output with a simple selector plug, and the Haydon HAY-ACCESS12/24V8/4A-8W gives 8 A at 12 V or 4 A at 24 V. The Dantech DA890IN power centre for the AXIS A1001 IP Door Controller takes a PoE+ or mains input and can power magnetic locks from PoE.
Monitoring
The Elmdene G13802BMU has mains and battery monitoring with fault outputs, and the Altronix AL600XPD16CB220 supervises AC fail, low battery and battery presence.
| Model | Output | Battery | Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| HAY-ACCESS12V5A-4W | 12V DC, 5A | One 12V, up to 7Ah | Houses up to two Paxton NET2 controllers |
| EFLOW6NA8DV | Eight 12VDC or 24VDC outputs | Battery fail and presence supervision | Fire alarm disconnect per output |
| DA448/XSM | 12VDC or 24VDC | Two 12V 7Ah VRLA | Selector plug |

Frequently asked questions
Which power supply is built to house Paxton Net2 controllers?
A boxed access control power supply with room inside for the door controllers, so one enclosure houses and powers them. The Haydon HAY-ACCESS12V5A-4W is a boxed 12V DC 5A (60W) supply designed to house a maximum of two Paxton NET2 controllers, with space for one 12V standby battery of 7Ah at most. For more modules, the Haydon HAY-ACCESS12/24V8/4A-8W typically holds a maximum of six Paxton/ACT modules as standard.
Where does the fire panel connect on an access control power supply?
To its fire input, which differs by model. The Dantech DA774 switches its second output PCB when a low current 12V DC feed is applied to the Fire Enable terminal on its monitoring PCB, and the 2A lock outputs of the Dantech DA482 can be switched via a single fire panel relay. On the Altronix AL1024ACMCB220, the fire alarm disconnect is individually selectable for any or all of its 8 outputs, latching or non-latching.
How do I check what size standby battery a power supply takes?
Check the battery space of that model. The Haydon HAY-ACCESS12V5A-4W has space for one 12V standby battery up to 7Ah, the Dantech DA774 houses one VRLA battery of up to 17Ah, and the Dantech DA457-8 rack houses up to two 12Ah VRLA batteries. On larger systems, the Elmdene MULTI-ACCESS-PSU12 has a separate battery compartment that holds 3 x 12V 38Ah or 6 x 12V 17Ah batteries.
How do I change a power supply output between 12V and 24V?
On a dual-voltage model, with its selector. The output of the Dantech DA448/XSM is changed from 12V to 24V with a simple selector plug, giving 12VDC (13.7) or 24VDC (27.4). The Haydon HAY-ACCESS12/24V8/4A-8W has a user-selectable 12 VDC or 24 VDC output, giving 8 A at 12 V or 4 A at 24 V, and the Dantech DA890IN has a user-selectable 12VDC or 24VDC lock output voltage.
How does a power supply report a mains or battery fault?
Through fault outputs, supervision contacts and status LEDs, depending on the model. The Elmdene G13810BM-8-R has mains and battery monitoring with independent fault outputs, and the Elmdene G13802BMU has mains and battery monitoring, fault outputs and multi LED status indication. The Altronix AL600XPD16CB220 has AC fail, low battery and battery presence supervision on form "C" contacts, with a notification trigger selectable for 30s or 6hr.
