Choosing Horn Speakers
Settle how the horn will be fed, by a 100V line or by a network cable, then check its power, its loudness and its weather rating.
Line-fed horns
The Penton APH30T/ENC is a 30W weatherproof horn loudspeaker with 100V line tappings of 30/15/7.5/3.75W. The TOA SC-610M is a 10W paging horn speaker that works on a 100 V line or 70 V line. The TOA CS-64 is a wide-range weatherproof horn speaker rated at 6 W, for paging, background music and tone signalling distribution. The Clever Acoustics CRSP01 has an internal 100V/70V transformer and is for voice announcement and background music.
Network and PoE horns
The Netgenium ASP7203-IP is a native IP device for public address, pre-recorded message broadcast and scheduled announcements in external environments. The Hikvision DS-QAZ1325G1T(C) network horn speaker has a rated power of 25W. The Axis Communications 02962-001 is an all-in-one network speaker system certified for Zone and Division 1 hazardous areas. The Netgenium ASP6203-POE is a PoE-powered external horn speaker with a built-in power supply and audio amplifier.
Loudness
The Penton APH30T/ENC produces 108dB at 1m with 1W and 122 dB at 1m at full power. The TOA CS-64 has a sensitivity of 96 dB (1 W, 1 m). The Hikvision DS-QAZ1325G1T(C) has a 110 dB nominal sensitivity and a rated maximum SPL of 124 dB at 1 metre.
Weather rating
The Penton APH30T/ENC is IP 66 rated and suitable for external use, and the TOA SC-610M is rated IP 65 for indoor and outdoor applications. The Penton MHS20T/ENC is a heavy-duty weatherproof metal re-entrant horn loudspeaker that is non-corrosive and resistant to salt laden air. The Signet ABT-T1410 horn-type fire alarm loudspeaker has an IP66 rating and a casing made of ABS.
A built-in amplifier
The Penton PH20A-24 incorporates a 20W low impedance class D amplifier: powering the unit requires a 24Vdc power supply, and audio can be fed from a standard line level input.

Frequently asked questions
What is a horn loudspeaker made of?
Metal or plastic, according to the model. The Penton MHS20T/ENC is a metal horn loudspeaker with a grey aluminium housing and a stainless steel U bracket, designed with the industrial market in mind. The Penton APH30T/ENC is made from UL-94V0 plastic with UV inhibitors, and the Clever Acoustics CRSP19 has a rugged ABS enclosure with metal mounting brackets. The TOA SC-610M has a shock-resistant aluminium oval horn.
How does audio reach an IP speaker?
Over the IP network: an IP speaker connects to the network and takes its audio from it, often with power over the same cable. The Netgenium ASP7203-IP is a native IP device, powered and connected to the IP network with a single cable and managed with a web browser. The Hikvision DS-QAZ1325G1T(C) network horn speaker supports the SIP protocol, while the Netgenium ASP6203-POE takes its power from PoE but connects to the audio source via an RCA plug.
Where is a PA horn speaker installed?
In large open spaces and external environments. The Clever Acoustics CRSP19 is for installation into large open spaces such as sports venues, car parks and warehouses, and the Penton MHS20T/ENC for places such as shopping centres, railway stations and prisons. The Netgenium ASP7203-IP PoE horn speaker is for public address, pre-recorded message broadcast and scheduled announcements in external environments.
What is a horn speaker?
A horn speaker is a loudspeaker with a horn that projects spoken word or warning tones, used for paging and voice announcements over large areas. The Clever Acoustics CRSP19 is a weather resistant horn loudspeaker for paging and voice reinforcement. On the Axis Communications 02962-001, messages come through loud and clear even over long distances and in noisy industrial environments, thanks to the horn and built-in digital signal processing. The TOA CS-64 has an exponential horn for uniform and clear sound dispersion.
Which power tappings does a 100V horn speaker have?
A 100V horn speaker's transformer tappings set how much power it can take from the 100V line, chosen with a selector switch. The Penton APH30T/ENC has 100V line tappings of 30/15/7.5/3.75W, and the TOA CS-64 has taps of 1 W, 3 W and 6 W at 100 V, changed with a rotary switch. On the TOA SC-610M, the 100 V line settings are 10 W, 5 W, 3 W and 1 W, chosen on the input impedance selector switch.
