Surge Protection Devices (SPD)
Surge protection devices (SPD) guard CCTV, network and PoE equipment against voltage surges and transients on its cables. The page holds rack-mounted and single-channel Nitek protectors for video, coax and network lines, AMG Systems in-line and DIN-rail PoE protectors, an Axis Communications outdoor protector and surge protection module, and models from ACT Meters, Comnet, Dahua Technology and TRENDnet.

Choosing Surge Protection Devices (SPD)
Match the protector to the cable it sits on, then check the PoE power and data rate it has to pass and where it will be mounted.
PoE power and data rate
The AMG Systems AMG110M supports Ethernet speeds of 10/100/1000Mb and PoE pass-through up to 65W. The single channel AMG110M-1X-SP and the dual channel AMG110-2X-SP have RJ45 ports that support 1/2.5/5/10Gb speeds, and support 15W, 30W, 60W, 90W and 95W PoE. The Comnet CLESP is IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at compliant for PoE and PoE Plus.
Weatherproof units
The Axis Communications 5801-641, the AXIS T8061, is enclosed in a weatherproof metal casing with an IP66 rating and is easy to mount on a wall or pole. The TRENDnet TI-OS300 has an IP67-rated metal enclosure and Ethernet cable glands. The Nitek 110POEWPS is a weatherproof CAT6 rated 110 punchdown surge protector that passes PoE+ power.
Rack-mounted protection
The Nitek IPPTR12 provides 12 channels of surge protection for network devices and fits a standard 19 inch rack. The Nitek IPPWR-16M is a 16-channel, rack mount surge protector for 10/100/1000 network devices, on which a channel is replaceable with IPPWR-R and/or IPCOAX-R replacement cards.
Camera video and coax
The Nitek CAMPDD24 is a camera video, PTZ and 12/24 volt power surge protector with a 2.8V clamping voltage. The Nitek IPCOAX-1 is an in-line, IP over coax network surge protector with female BNC connectors at the input and output and a separate input for 12 or 24V power.
Earthing
The AMG Systems AMG110-2X-SP must be correctly grounded, so that a surge or transient voltage has an unobstructed path to ground. The Comnet CLESP has an integral grounding tab, which must be securely connected to the frame ground of the installation.
Alarm power
The ACT Meters ACT1313PLUS clamps the 12VDC supply against spikes to the control panel, alarm detectors and plug-on communicators.

Frequently asked questions
Can a PoE surge protector carry 60W, 90W or 95W PoE power?
Yes, if it is rated for it: check that the protector's PoE support covers PoE++ for a 60W, 90W or 95W load. The TRENDnet TI-OS300 supports PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ devices up to 95W. The AMG Systems AMG110-2X-SP has 95W PoE support, with 20kA surge protection on its two RJ45 output ports.
Which surge protector suits a CCTV camera video cable or a DVR?
Match the protector to the point you are guarding: a camera unit protects video and camera power inputs, while a rack unit protects many video channels at a recorder. The Nitek CAMPDD24 protects video and camera power inputs with a 2.8V clamping voltage. The DVRPTR16 gives multi-stage surge protection to 16 video channels and the 2 or 4 wire PTZ data, and fits a standard 19 inch rack.
When is a rack-mounted network surge protector used?
It is used where several network devices meet at one point, such as a switch, NVR or group of IP cameras, with one surge-protected channel per connection. The Nitek IPPTR12 gives 12 channels of multi-stage surge protection for 10/100 networks in a standard 19 inch rack, and the IPPWR-16M is a 16-channel rack mount protector for 10/100/1000 network devices.
Which Ethernet surge protectors have a weatherproof metal enclosure for outdoor PoE devices?
Look for an outdoor Ethernet surge protector in a weatherproof metal casing with an IEC 60529 rating such as IP66 or IP67, fitted where the cable enters the building. The Axis Communications 5801-641 (AXIS T8061) has an IP66 weatherproof metal casing and is installed before the cable enters the building or beside a wall or pole-mounted camera. The TRENDnet TI-OS300 has an IP67-rated metal enclosure and Ethernet cable glands.
What is an RJ45 surge protector?
An RJ45 surge protector is an in-line unit with RJ45 connectors that plugs into an existing Ethernet port to protect it from surges. The Comnet CLESP plugs directly into any 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet port, and its grounding tab must be connected to the installation's frame ground. The AMG Systems AMG110M has a compact in-line RJ45 housing, and the Nitek IPMRJ-1 is a single channel in-line protector for one 10/100/1000 Ethernet port.
