Long Range RFID Readers

Long range RFID readers identify a card, tag or vehicle at a distance, so the user does not have to present a card close to the reader. Types include UHF readers for vehicle identification and car park access, hands-free readers for people, and the tags and receivers that work with them, from brands including CDVI and Nedap. The CDVI A6U48, for example, identifies people and vehicles at up to 6 metres.

Choosing Long Range RFID Readers

Choose by read range first, then by the credential the reader reads and how it connects to the door or gate controller.

UHF readers

The CDVI A6U48 is a gate access automation system supplied with an interface board, power supply, pole fixing bracket (KFMA6U) and built-in receiver (RXU4GO128). The CDVI A10U48-NR long range U4GO kit operates at a frequency of 865MHz. The Acre N54504-Z106-A100 is an EPC Gen 2 (ISO 18000-63) compliant RFID reader with an integrated antenna, designed for outdoor use and rated IP66. The CIE Group ACR-CRP12 reads cards or key fobs with 902-928 MHz and 865-868 MHz UHF technology and connects to controllers via Wiegand.

Hands-free readers

The CDVI DTRR1434R is a self-contained standalone reader/controller with capacity for up to 30 users, an integral lock relay and exit button input. The Paxton 313-110 has a built-in hands-free interface that removes the need to lay ground loops, and it is used with Switch2 or Net2.

Key fob receivers

The TDSi 5012-0200 uses two-button key-fobs that transmit a unique and highly secure encrypted code to a receiving unit, for vehicular control such as a car park. The CDVI RXU4GO128 is the receiver unit for the U4GO system: it works with AES128 encryption and frequency 433.92MHz and can be mounted outdoors (IP55).

Tags and boosters

The Nedap 9219641 is a passive UHF tag designed for mounting on exterior metal surfaces. The Nedap 9948538 is a vehicle-mounted booster for proximity cards with easy windscreen mounting by suction pad. The Nedap 9217363 supports EPC Gen 2 passive UHF tags and Power over Ethernet plus (PoE+).

Frequently asked questions

What is a UHF RFID reader?

It is a reader that uses Ultra High Frequency (UHF) detection to identify a tag at a distance. The CDVI A6U48 is a UHF (865-868MHz) system for the identification of people and vehicles at a distance of up to 6 metres. The Acre N54504-Z106-A100 is an EPC Gen 2 (ISO 18000-63) compliant RFID reader that operates with passive UHF tags, and the CIE Group ACR-CRP12 identifies cards or key fobs with 902-928 MHz and 865-868 MHz UHF technology.

How does RFID vehicle access control work?

A reader at the entrance reads a tag or token in the vehicle, the control unit checks that user's access permissions, and access is then granted or denied. The Paxton 313-110 reads a hands-free token from within a vehicle at up to 5 metres. The CDVI A6U48 detects vehicles up to 80 km/h, and the Acre N54504-Z106-A100 is made for Automatic Vehicle Identification applications such as parking and gated communities.

What is a Paxton long range reader used for?

It reads hands-free tokens at a distance, so a driver can be identified from inside the vehicle at a car park entrance. The Paxton Access 313-110 is designed specifically for car park access points, reads hands-free tokens at up to 5 metres and works with Switch2 or Net2. It also works as a close proximity reader for users without hands-free tokens, and only one reader is needed at each access point.

How far can a long range RFID reader read?

Read range depends on the reader and on the card, tag or token it reads, so compare the reader's maximum read range. The Paxton 313-110 reads hands-free tokens at up to 5 metres, and the CDVI A6U48 identifies people and vehicles at up to 6 metres. The CDVI A10U48-NR and the CIE Group ACR-CRP12 give 10m, and the CDVI DTRR1434R has a read range of up to 15m.

What is hands-free access control?

It is access gained without presenting a card directly to the reader. With the CDVI DTRR1434R, a card in a pocket or around the neck on a lanyard is still recognised and access is granted; the DTRR1434R is for hospitals, care homes and warehouses, and is compatible with DTXT long-range cards. The Paxton 313-110 has an integral hands-free interface for reading a hands-free token from within a vehicle.
