Fire Alarm Power Supplies

Fire alarm power supplies provide the monitored, battery-backed power that fire alarm devices and panels need, with EN 54-4 covering power supply equipment. This page holds standalone PSUs for detectors, sounders, repeaters and door retainers, replacement panel PSUs and PSU boards, and an external battery box, from makers including C-TEC, Elmdene, Kentec Electronics, Haes Technologies and Kidde.

Choosing Fire Alarm Power Supplies

Choose by what the supply has to power, then by its output and the standby batteries it must charge.

Power for fire alarm devices

The Haes PSU-1001 is a 1.5A EN54 power supply unit, the PSU-1002 is 3A, the PSU-1003 is 5A and the PSU-1004 is 10A. The PSU-1001, PSU-1002, PSU-1003 and PSU-1004 have dual supply outputs as standard, a failsafe fault relay output, a robust metal enclosure and Supply Healthy (green) and Fault Condition (yellow) LED indicators. Typical uses of the C-TEC BF560-24, BF562-1, BF562-3 and BF562-5 include powering beam detectors, auto-dial communicators, aspirating smoke detectors, auto-open vent systems, auxiliary sounder systems or any other device performing a mandatory function of a fire alarm system. The C-TEC BF562-5 is a 24V 5A switch mode/digital hybrid PSU certified to EN54-4/A2 by the LPCB and VdS.

Standby batteries

The Elmdene STV2402-C, STV2402-E, STV2405-C, STV2405-E and STV2405-H support charging of up to 65Ah batteries. The Hochiki K408 charges sealed lead acid batteries from 7Ah to 45Ah with battery high impedance monitoring, and the Kentec K25250M2 and K2540015 house up to 26Ah batteries. The Elmdene STX2410-H supports 18, 38 or 65Ah batteries, and the Kidde 9-30855-65 has an external housing for 65Ah batteries.

Battery monitoring

The C-TEC BF560-24, BF562-1, BF562-3 and BF562-5 comply with EN54-4/A2, so they must monitor battery resistance: a battery stored uncharged for long periods degrades, and a degraded battery shows as a fault.

Door retainer supplies

The Elmdene TR4 is designed for applications that need remote control of the power supply output; a typical use is powering magnetic door retainers, where a signal from the fire panel switches off the output to the doors when the fire alarm activates. Removal of an external 24V dc supply gives the TR4 BS 7273 compliant fail-safe operation. The Cranford Controls 304-002 gives a nominal 24VDC supply at a maximum of 4A, with remote switching that is frequently used for dc electromagnetic door retainers.

Frequently asked questions

What does a fire alarm PSU power?

It powers fire alarm devices that are not powered directly from the control panel, such as beam, aspirating and flame detectors, sounder circuits and remote communicators. The Haes PSU-1001 is a 1.5A EN54 part 4 unit with dual supply outputs and a failsafe fault relay output. Typical uses of the C-TEC BF562-3 include powering auxiliary sounder systems, and the Advanced MXP-551/D suits any fire alarm system that specifies EN54-4 power supply equipment.

What is a dual path power supply option?

It gives two independent supply paths between the power supply and the control panel. On the Kentec K25250M2 and K2540015, the optional dual output path (KD) variant does this in accordance with EN54-4 clause 6.4 and BS5839 pt1, clause 12.2.2.m. The Elmdene STV2402-E, STV2405-E and STV2405-H have an EN54-4 clause 6.4 compliant dual path power transmission option for when the PSU is used with CIE but contained in a separate enclosure.

How is a fire alarm PSU fault shown?

It is shown by a fault LED and a fault relay or volt-free output, and some units flash a code that names the condition. On C-TEC 5 Series PSUs such as the BF562-1 and BF562-5, the PSU status LED counts out the condition, with 1 flash for mains failure and 8 for output over voltage. The Elmdene STX2410-H yellow fault LED flashes on an output, battery or charger fault and on mains failure.

What is a replacement panel PSU?

It is a power supply made to replace the power supply of a particular fire panel range. The C-TEC CFP702/PSU is a replacement internal power supply for C-TEC CFP conventional panels and CFP Alarmsense two wire panels in 2, 4 and 8-zone versions, and the C-TEC XFP501/PSU is a replacement power supply for the XFP panel range. The Haes PSM3.0-24XLEN is a simple drop-in replacement for XLEN panels, rated to 3.0 amps, and the Advanced MXS-006 is a replacement or spare power supply unit for the MX-4400 panel range.

What does fail-safe mean on a door retainer PSU?

It means the output to the door retainers is cut off when its power or 24V control supply is removed. On the Cranford Controls 304-001, the load output is automatically cut off on power off, for fail-safe door retaining applications. On the Elmdene TR4, removal of an external 24V dc supply gives BS 7273 compliant fail-safe operation, and a signal from the fire panel switches off its output to magnetic door retainers when the fire alarm activates.
