About this product

The C-TEC BF375P is a 24V power supply for electromagnetic door retainers, the magnets that hold fire doors open. It suits installers linking a few held-open doors to a fire alarm panel or building management system. It gives 250mA, enough for up to 5 retainers rated at 50mA each.

Key features

  • Powers a small group of doors – up to 5 electromagnetic door retainers rated at 50mA each
  • Connects to what is already there – inputs for fire alarm control panels, building management systems, timers and relays
  • Release by hand – a red manual release button on the fascia
  • Easy to check – Mains On and Output Triggered indicators
  • Fits a standard box – mounts on a standard 25mm UK double gang flush or surface back box
  • Runs from the mains – 230V 50/60Hz, giving 250mA at 21-28V DC

For installers

  • Power: mains supply 230V 50/60Hz. Output 250mA at 21-28V DC.
  • Mounting: standard 25mm UK double gang flush or surface back box. 147 W x 87 H x 39 D mm, 480g. Rated IP40.
  • Cabling: connections for Hold off, Trigger Release, Local Trigger, and +V and 0V output.
  • Compatibility: for 24V DC electromagnetic door retainers. Trigger Release requires +5-27V DC at 5mA, and Hold Off requires a constant +5-27V DC at 5mA.

Frequently asked questions

How many door retainers can the BF375P power?

Up to 5, where each is rated at 50mA. The total output is 250mA at 24V DC.

How does a fire alarm panel release the doors?

Through its inputs. Trigger Release needs +5-27V DC at 5mA, Hold Off needs a constant +5-27V DC at 5mA, and Local Trigger triggers when taken to 0V.

Can the doors be released by hand?

Yes. There is a red manual release button on the fascia.

Can this be used as a general 24V supply?

It is not intended for that. C-TEC designed it to provide power to 24V DC electromagnetic door retainers, with release inputs built around that job.

What back box does it need?

A standard 25mm UK double gang flush or surface back box.

C-TEC BF375P door release power supply, front view

C-TEC 24V Door Release Power Supply Unit, 250mA BF375P

What this power supply does

An electromagnetic door retainer is a magnet that holds a door open until it is told to let go. Those retainers need a supply and a way of being switched off when a fire signal arrives, and this C-TEC unit provides both.

It suits buildings where a handful of doors are held open for everyday use. The door also needs its own closer so it shuts once released.

How it works

  • Trigger Release: this input uses a signal of +5-27V DC at 5mA to release the output.
  • Hold Off: this input needs a constant signal of +5-27V DC at 5mA, and it is the failsafe input. Test that the doors release when this signal is removed.
  • Local Trigger: this operates when the terminal is taken to 0V, which suits a simple switched contact.
  • Manual release: the red button on the fascia lets staff release the doors without any signal from the panel.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Adding up the load: add the current rating of every retainer on the circuit, and keep the total within 250mA. Retainers rated above 50mA will reduce how many it can carry.
  • Output voltage: the output runs at 21-28V DC, so check the retainer's stated working voltage against that range.

Installing it

It takes a standard 25mm UK double gang back box, flush or surface. The IP40 rating and -5ºC to +40ºC range mean a dry indoor position.

This unit is connected to the mains, so the work should be done by a competent person with the supply isolated. Label the circuit at the consumer unit so it is not switched off by accident.

Planning your system

Choose your door retainers at the same time, and check each one's voltage and current. For larger groups of doors, compare this with other fire alarm power supplies.

Holding fire doors open is a fire strategy decision. On an escape route, ask whoever holds the fire strategy before fitting retainers.

What IP40 means

IP ratings describe protection against solid objects and water. The first digit covers objects and the second covers water, where 0 means no protection.
