Fire Exit Signs

An emergency exit sign shows the way out along an escape route and keeps lighting it when the mains supply fails. This page has Duceri exit boxes in surface, slimline, bulkhead and hanging styles with up, down, left and right legends, and Knightsbridge LED exit signs for wall, ceiling or suspended mounting, in maintained, non-maintained and self-test versions.

Choosing Fire Exit Signs

Decide how the sign will be mounted, which way its arrow must point, and how it will be tested.

Mounting style

Surface exit boxes fix flat to a wall: the Duceri D120 series are 3W LED boxes with finishes including black, brass, chrome and white. The D121AWH and D121SAWH are slimline surface boxes, and the D151AWH is an IP65 bulkhead exit sign. For a sign hung from the ceiling, the double-sided D330AWH and D330SAWH have a polycarbonate frame, and the Knightsbridge EMLSUSL has a drop that adjusts to a maximum of 800mm including its legend. The EMEXITL uses a hanger and hinge system for wall or ceiling mounting.

Legends

The arrow must point along the route from where the sign is seen. Duceri D120 boxes are made with one fixed down, left, right or up legend, so pick the version for the direction needed, while the All Legends D121AWH and D330AWH cover any direction. The Knightsbridge EMRNSTL has interchangeable legends, with arrow up, down and left/right legends included.

Operation and testing

A maintained sign is lit whenever the mains is on, a non-maintained sign lights when the mains fails, and the Duceri D120DBK switchable box has maintained and non-maintained operation. Self-test signs run their own checks at set intervals: the Knightsbridge EMXSTL has a self-test facility complying with EN 62034, and Duceri self-test boxes include the D120SDWH and D520DWH.

Frequently asked questions

Where should escape route signs be placed?

Escape route signs should be placed so that an exit sign or directional arrow is visible from any point on the route, especially where the way out is not obvious. Fit them above final exit doors, at changes of direction, at stairs and where routes split. Pick an arrow legend that shows the direction of travel at that spot.

How do illuminated fire exit signs work?

Illuminated fire exit signs light the legend with an LED and switch to a backup battery when the mains fails. In maintained mode the sign shows continuously, whereas non-maintained mode switches it on during a power cut. A self-test model runs automatic lamp and battery checks, reducing manual testing.

What colour are fire exit signs?

Fire exit signs in the UK are green and white, showing a running figure and arrow on a green background, sometimes with the words Fire exit. Green marks a safe condition, unlike the red used for firefighting equipment. The housing can be white, black, chrome or brass, but the legend stays green and white.

Do fire exit signs have to be photoluminescent?

No, fire exit signs do not have to be photoluminescent. In buildings that need emergency lighting, exit signs are usually internally illuminated or lit by a nearby emergency light, so they stay visible in a power cut. Photoluminescent signs, which glow after absorbing light, often act as a supplement. The range here includes LED exit boxes, a bulkhead exit sign and hanging signs.

What is a fire exit sign?

A fire exit sign is a safety sign that marks an exit or the direction of an escape route. It helps people find the way out of a building in an emergency. Illuminated types use an LED and a backup battery, and mounting styles include wall boxes, bulkheads and signs hung from the ceiling.
