LED Panels

An LED panel is a flat, shallow fitting that spreads light evenly with little glare, either dropped into a suspended ceiling grid or recessed into a round cut-out. For 600x600mm grids there are Knightsbridge LUMI6060 backlit panels, ELENA troffers, including the EL6060EM with a self-test emergency function, and the MRBLED modular LED fitting. KARA round recessed panels run from 6W to 24W and suit shallow ceilings in offices and corridors.

Choosing LED Panels

Start with the ceiling: a suspended grid takes a square panel, and a plasterboard ceiling a round recessed one.

Grid ceilings

The LUMI6060 panels are backlit and fit standard 600x600mm grids with 15mm or 25mm tee. The LUMI6060 is 30W, 4000K and 4,385lm. The LUMI6060PRO, LUMI6060PROAD and LUMI6060PRODALI add a choice of 3000K, 4000K or 5700K and a UGR19 diffuser to cut glare. The ELENA EL6060 troffer is 595x595mm, switchable between 23W and 33W and between three colour temperatures.

Round recessed panels

KARA panels are edge-lit with a slim body for shallow ceilings, and are all 4000K cool white. The KA6CWTD, KA12CWTD, KA18CWTD and KA24CWTD are dimmable, while the KA6CW and KA24CW are non-dimmable. The KA12CW needs a 155mm cut-out.

Emergency options

The EL6060EM has a self-test emergency function with a lithium battery and at least 3 hours of emergency light. A 3-hour emergency kit is an optional accessory for the LUMI6060, an emergency option for the MRBLED is sold separately as the EMKIT2, and the EMKIT2L emergency kit suits the KA6CW, KA6CWTD, KA12CW, KA12CWTD, KA24CW and KA24CWTD.

Frequently asked questions

Which LED panel fits a suspended ceiling grid?

A 600x600mm panel. The Knightsbridge LUMI6060, LUMI6060PRO, LUMI6060PROAD and LUMI6060PRODALI fit standard 600x600mm grids with 15mm or 25mm tee, the ELENA EL6060 and EL6060EM are 595x595mm troffers, the EL6060 fits standard 600x600 ceiling grids, and the MRBLED is a 600x600mm recessed modular fitting.

What is the difference between a backlit and an edge-lit panel?

A backlit panel has its LEDs behind the diffuser, facing down, while an edge-lit panel has them round the rim and spreads the light across the face through a light guide. The LUMI6060 panels are backlit; the KARA round panels are edge-lit, which keeps them slim enough for shallow ceilings with even light and no dark spots.

What does UGR19 mean on an LED panel?

UGR is the Unified Glare Rating, a measure of how much discomfort glare a fitting causes; a lower number means less glare. UGR19 is a level often asked for in offices and classrooms where people work at screens. The LUMI6060PRO, LUMI6060PROAD and LUMI6060PRODALI have a UGR19 rated diffuser.

Can LED panels be dimmed?

Some can, by different methods. The LUMI6060PROAD dims by 0-10V control, the LUMI6060PRODALI is DALI2 compliant with switch-dim, and the KARA KA6CWTD, KA12CWTD, KA18CWTD and KA24CWTD are dimmable, with compatibility to be checked before installation. The LUMI6060, KA6CW and KA24CW are non-dimmable.

Is there an LED panel with built-in emergency lighting?

Yes, the ELENA EL6060EM. Its self-test function tests the emergency operation at pre-programmed intervals, and its lithium battery gives at least 3 hours of emergency light. For other panels, a 3-hour emergency kit is an optional accessory for the LUMI6060, and the EMKIT2L emergency kit suits the KA6CW, KA6CWTD, KA12CW, KA12CWTD, KA24CW and KA24CWTD.

Can the colour temperature be changed on a panel?

On some. The ELENA EL6060 and the LUMI6060PRO, LUMI6060PROAD and LUMI6060PRODALI offer 3000K, 4000K or 5700K, so one fitting can suit a warmer reception area or a cooler workspace, and the EL6060EM has triple colour temperature adjustment. The LUMI6060 and the KARA round panels are 4000K cool white.

Can an LED panel replace a fluorescent modular fitting?

Yes. The LUMI6060, LUMI6060PRO and LUMI6060PRODALI are designed to replace old T8 and T5 modular luminaires, and the MRBLED 32W modular fitting is an alternative to traditional 4 x 18W fluorescent fittings, giving 3370 lumens at 4000K. The LUMI6060 and MRBLED fit the same 600x600mm grid opening.

What size hole does a round recessed panel need?

The KARA KA12CW needs a 155mm cut-out diameter. The KA6CWTD panel is 149mm in diameter. KARA panels have a slim profile, which is useful where the depth above the ceiling is limited, such as under a joist or in a shallow void.

How efficient are these LED panels?

The ELENA EL6060 and EL6060EM are rated up to 140lm/W, as is the LUMI6060, and the LUMI6060PRO, LUMI6060PROAD and LUMI6060PRODALI up to 130lm/W. In practice the LUMI6060 gives 4,385lm from 30W, and the MRBLED 3370 lumens from 32W. Compare lumens per watt when running costs over long working hours matter.

Can a grid panel be fitted to a solid ceiling?

The LUMI6060 panels can, with an accessory. A surface-mounted kit, a suspension kit and recessed mounting clips are accessories for the LUMI6060 and LUMI6060PRO, so the same panel can go onto plasterboard or hang below a high ceiling instead of sitting in a grid.
