Speaker Components & Drivers

Speaker components here are the parts inside a cabinet and around it: woofers, sub drivers, compression drivers and tweeters, 2-way crossovers and subwoofer filters, steel grilles and volume controls. Citronic drivers such as the 902.101UK are direct replacements for its CASA and CUBA cabinets, and QTX parts such as the 902.503UK compression driver are made for named QTX cabinets. Adastra adds relay-fitted attenuators such as the 952.470UK for 100V line systems.

Choosing Speaker Components & Drivers

Start from the cabinet the part is going into, because many of these parts name the speaker series they replace, then match the impedance and the power rating.

Citronic replacement drivers

Citronic woofers come in 4 ohm and 8 ohm versions, and the cabinet decides which. The 902.101UK 12" woofer is 8 ohm for CASA or CUBA passive cabinets, while the 902.102UK is 4 ohm for CASA, CUBA or CLARA active cabinets. Sub drivers follow the same split: the 902.121UK is for CASA passive sub cabinets and the 902.120UK for CASA active subs. Some parts belong to one system. The 902.118UK 18" sub driver, with a cast aluminium basket, replaces the driver in the C-118S sub cabinet, and the 902.208UK neodymium woofer and 902.210UK HF horn driver are replacements for the C-208 array cabinet.

QTX chassis speakers

QTX drivers are grouped by cabinet series. The 902.518UK and 902.521UK replace the main driver in QR passive cabinets, the 902.519UK and 902.522UK in QR active cabinets, and the 902.509UK and 902.512UK in QS series speakers. QT series drivers such as the 902.545UK are woofers with spade terminals. For the high frequencies, the 902.503UK compression driver fits the QR12, QR15, QS12 and QS15 among others, and the 902.530UK fits cabinets such as the QR8, QR10A, QT6 and QT8.

Crossovers, filters and grilles

The 900.582UK passive subwoofer filter crosses over at 120Hz with 12dB/oct damping and connects by solder terminals. Replacement networks such as the 902.557UK for the QR12 and the 902.506UK for the QR15 are replacements for the networks in those cabinets. The 900.954UK is a black powder coated steel grille with rubber surround edging, 380mm across.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right replacement driver for my cabinet?

Match the cabinet series named on the driver first, then the impedance. The Citronic 902.101UK, for example, is a direct replacement for CASA or CUBA passive cabinets at 8 ohm, while the 902.102UK is the 4 ohm version for CASA, CUBA or CLARA active cabinets. QTX drivers are named by series too, such as the 902.519UK for QR active cabinets.

Does it matter whether I fit a 4 ohm or an 8 ohm driver?

Yes, fit the impedance the cabinet was built for. In the QTX QR range, the 902.522UK for active cabinets is 4 ohms and the 902.521UK for passive cabinets is 8 ohm. Citronic splits its CASA sub drivers the same way, with the 902.120UK at 4 ohm for active sub cabinets and the 902.121UK at 8 ohm for passive ones.

What does a compression driver do in a PA cabinet?

A compression driver reproduces the high frequencies, coupled to a horn or tweeter flare. The Citronic 902.103UK is a titanium compression driver with a 34mm threaded exit, made to couple with tweeter flares in full-range PA speakers. The QTX 902.503UK has a 1" titanium diaphragm and replaces the HF horn driver in QR and QS cabinets.

Which crossover do I need for a two-way speaker?

Pick a 2-way crossover whose power rating covers the amplifier and whose impedance matches the drivers. The QTX 2-way crossovers are 8 ohm and include the 900.588UK at 100W and the 900.590UK at 250W with a 2.5kHz crossover point. For a QR12 or QR15 cabinet, fit its own replacement network, the 902.557UK or the 902.506UK.

What is a passive subwoofer filter?

It is a crossover that feeds the low frequencies to a subwoofer driver. The QTX 900.582UK and 900.584UK are 4 ohm passive filters for Hi-Fi and PA loudspeaker systems, with a 120Hz crossover frequency and 12dB/oct damping, wired by solder terminals. The 900.582UK is rated at 400W.

Can a 100V volume control be overridden by a fire alarm?

Yes, the Adastra relay-fitted volume controls can. The 952.461UK, 952.464UK, 952.467UK and 952.470UK all have a 24V relay that bypasses the attenuator to full volume when triggered from a fire alarm panel. They come with a plastic surface mount back box and an ABS faceplate, and attenuate in 10 steps: 8 x 3dB and 2 x 6dB.
