Power Adapters & Supplies

A power supply converts mains AC into the low-voltage DC that cameras, access control, alarms and LED lighting run on, and a power adapter does the same from a plug-in unit. Choosing Power Adapters & Supplies

Choose a power supply by the voltage and current the equipment needs, where the supply will be mounted, and whether it must keep running in a power cut.

Voltage and current

Security equipment commonly runs on 12V DC, often from a 13.8V supply that also charges a standby battery, while LED tape and some intercom and camera systems run on 24V. Add up the current every device draws and choose a supply rated above it, such as the Haydon HAY-PSU12V5ABBL at 12V 5A.

Battery backup

Boxed PSUs with battery backup keep alarms, access control and cameras running through a mains failure. Most Haydon boxed supplies state a tamper switch, and the HAY-DC24V3ABBLPSU adds a mains-fail relay that signals the outage to a panel.

Mounting and environment

DIN-rail supplies, such as the AMG Systems AMGPSU-T48-P60 and Elmdene G13805NU, fit a control cabinet, and Dantech rack-mount supplies, such as the DA469/16, fit an equipment rack. LYYT 153.7 series IP67 waterproof supplies from 30W to 300W power LED tape outdoors, and the Haydon HAY-IP-24VPSU-1X4A is an IP66 24 VAC supply for outdoor CCTV.

Plug-in adapters, chargers and inverters

Plug-in adapters from Dahua, Hanwha Vision and Knightsbridge power single cameras and LED loads, and PoE injectors from Ruijie send power down a network cable. Mercury soft start modified sine wave inverters run 230V equipment from a 12V or 24V battery, and Mercury USB chargers include 45W and 65W GaN models.

What is the difference between a power adapter and a power supply?

A power adapter is usually a plug-in or in-line unit that powers one device, such as a camera or LED driver. A power supply here often means a boxed or DIN-rail unit powering several devices from one point, sometimes with battery backup, fused outputs and tamper protection.

What size power supply do I need for CCTV?

Add up the current the cameras on the supply draw at their rated voltage, allow for infrared at night, and choose a supply rated above the total. A 12V 5A boxed PSU such as the Haydon HAY-PSU12V5ABBL suits several cameras, with battery backup for mains failures.

Why choose a power supply with battery backup?

It keeps alarms, access control and cameras running when the mains fails, charging a standby battery while the mains is present. Most Haydon boxed supplies with battery backup state a tamper switch, and some add a mains-fail relay so a panel can report the outage.

Which power supply do I need for LED tape?

Match the supply to the tape voltage, 12V or 24V, and choose a wattage above the tape's total load. LYYT 153.7 series universal supplies run from 30W to 300W and are rated IP67 for outdoor and damp positions, and Knightsbridge LEDAD36 is a 36W 24V constant voltage adaptor.

What does a PoE injector do?

A PoE injector adds power to a network cable so a PoE camera or access point can run without a separate supply, where the switch cannot provide power. The Ruijie RG-POE-50-60W-MG supplies 56 V at 60 W on a 2.5G port, and the RG-POE-AF15 supplies 15.6 W.

Can I run mains equipment from a 12V battery?

Yes, with an inverter. Mercury soft start modified sine wave inverters convert 12V or 24V DC to 230V AC from 150W to 2500W, and pure sine wave models run from 300W to 1000W; most name a USB socket or port in their title. Choose an inverter rated above the wattage of the equipment, for starting loads.

Which USB chargers are in this range?

Mercury USB chargers include 20W PD USB-C chargers, a 35W charger with 3 USB-A ports and one USB-C, and 45W and 65W GaN models with USB-A and USB-C ports, plus a compact dual-port USB car charger with QC and PD.

Is there a UK to Europe travel adaptor?

Yes. The Mercury 429.905UK is a UK to Europe travel adaptor rated 2300W and 10A, certified to BS8546:2016, the standard for travel adaptors. An adaptor changes the plug but not the voltage, so running 110V equipment from UK mains needs a step-down converter instead.
