Floodlights

A floodlight is an outdoor light that throws a wide, even wash across a driveway, yard or car park from a single fitting. This range covers ESP LED security lights in versions with and without sensors, Knightsbridge LED floodlights from 10W to 200W, twin-spot and twin-head models, adjustable wall packs with photocell sensors, add-on PIR and microwave sensors, and GJD floodlights.

Choosing Floodlights

The main choices are output, how the light is switched and how exposed the position is.

Output

Knightsbridge floodlights run from the 10W FLN10 at 1085lm to the 200W FLPA200 at 20,000 lumens, for anything between a doorway and a service yard. ESP NH security lights run from 10W to 50W.

Sensor, photocell or switched

PIR models switch on to movement and off after a set time, which suits security lighting. The Knightsbridge WPCWA and WPCWAEM wall packs have a photocell sensor, which switches the light by daylight level; on the WPCWA it can be disconnected if not required. Non-sensor models suit areas switched from inside, and the Knightsbridge combo floodlights take a separate FLNPIR or FLNMIC sensor.

Colour and finish

Knightsbridge FLN, FLPA and FLHL floodlights are cool white or 6000K daylight: the FLN10, FLN20, FLN30, FLN50 and FLPA150 state 4000K cool white, and the FLPA100D, FLPA150D and FLPA200D 6000K. The WPCWA, WPCWAEM and SL20CCTB let the colour temperature be set at the fitting. The FLPA150, FLPA150D, FLPA200 and FLPA200D have an anthracite finish. ESP NH lights come in black and white bodies.

Weather ratings

The Knightsbridge FLN, FLPA, FLTB, FLTPB and SL20CCTB floodlights and the WPCWA wall packs are all IP65 and the FLHL100 is IP66, which covers exposed wall and soffit positions. The LYYT battery twin floodlight is IP44 and suits sheltered spots.

How many lumens does an outdoor floodlight need?

A 10W floodlight such as the Knightsbridge FLN10, at 1085lm, lights a doorway or side path. A driveway suits the 20W FLN20 at 2240lm or the 50W FLN50 at 5430lm, and a car park or yard the 100W FLPA100D at 10000 lumens or the 200W FLPA200 at 20,000 lumens.

What is the difference between a PIR floodlight and a photocell floodlight?

A PIR floodlight switches on when it detects movement and off after a set time, so it lights an area when someone is there. A photocell model, such as the Knightsbridge WPCWA wall pack, has a photocell sensor that switches the light by daylight level rather than by movement.

Can a sensor be added to a floodlight later?

On the Knightsbridge combo floodlights, yes. The FLNPIR PIR sensor and the FLNMIC microwave sensor are accessories for them; the FLNMIC microwave sensor has an adjustable detection zone of 2 to 12m. Check the floodlight is listed as a combo model before ordering a sensor.

Are these floodlights suitable for exposed outdoor walls?

The Knightsbridge ones are. The Knightsbridge FLN, FLPA, FLTB, FLTPB and SL20CCTB floodlights and WPCWA wall packs are all rated IP65 and the FLHL100 is IP66, which covers driving rain on an exposed wall or soffit. The LYYT battery twin floodlight is rated IP44, so it is better fitted under a canopy, porch or deep soffit.

Which colour temperature should an outdoor floodlight be?

Cool white or daylight is usual for security and work areas. Knightsbridge floodlights include 4000K cool white models such as the FLN10, FLN30 and FLPA150 and 6000K daylight models such as the FLPA100D, and the WPCWA and WPCWAEM wall packs and SL20CCTB twin head let the colour temperature be selected at the fitting.

Is there a floodlight that needs no mains wiring?

The LYYT twin LED floodlight is battery powered, with a motion sensor, 400 lumens and a 120 degree sensor angle, so it can go on a shed, gate or fence where there is no mains supply. It is rated IP44, so fit it in a sheltered position.

What is a twin-head floodlight?

A twin-head floodlight has two adjustable heads on one base, so a single fitting can light two areas at different angles. The Knightsbridge FLTB and FLTPB twin spots are 18W and the SL20CCTB twin head 20W; the FLTB is switched, and the FLTPB and SL20CCTB have a PIR sensor.

What is a wall pack light?

A wall pack is a compact floodlight fixed flat to a wall to light the ground in front of a building. The Knightsbridge WPCWA and WPCWAEM are adjustable 10W/15W wall packs with a photocell sensor, and both let the colour temperature be selected from 3000K, 4000K and 6500K.
