Batteries & Battery Packs

This page gathers batteries for everyday devices and for security and fire equipment: alkaline cells in sizes such as AA, AAA, C, D and 9V, GP zinc chloride and NiMH rechargeable cells, lithium, coin, button and hearing aid batteries, replacement packs for alarm panels, detectors and access control, and Yuasa sealed lead-acid standby batteries. It also carries the kit around the cells: battery leads and harnesses, chargers, power banks and battery testers.

Choosing Batteries & Battery Packs

Decide first whether the battery goes in an everyday device or in security equipment: household cells are chosen by size and chemistry, system batteries by the part number of the equipment they power.

Household cells

Alkaline cells from Duracell, Energizer and GP cover the everyday sizes, with bulk options such as the Energizer 656.930UK AA 24 pack and Duracell Procell Constant boxes of 10. GP Greencell zinc chloride cells such as the 656.053UK AAA suit low to medium drain devices like clocks and remote controls, and ReCyko+ NiMH cells such as the 656.855UK can be recharged hundreds of times. GP supplies the largest share of the batteries on this page.

Alarm, fire and access control batteries

Security batteries are usually made for one system, so work from the part number. Ajax internal batteries such as the 149035.375.WH give the Superior Hub G3 up to 16 hours of backup to Grade 2, and the 132037.349.NC is a 6.4V 36Ah LiFePO4 pack for the Hub BP Jeweller. JCI Visonic packs such as the 0-9912-L power PowerMax panels. Comelit PAC CR2 and CR123A lithium cells (PLCYLB02, PLHDLB02) serve PAC Access Central access control.

Standby lead-acid batteries

Yuasa sealed lead-acid VRLA batteries come in 12V sizes such as the NP2.1-12 (2.1Ah), NP12-12 (12Ah) and NP17-12I (17Ah), and the C-TEC BC286/2 links two 12V batteries into a 24V 7Ah pack.

Chargers, power banks and testers

The page also carries battery chargers, such as the Veracity VAD-CHGR spare charger for the VAD-PS PointSource battery PoE injector. The Mercury 421.770UK is an emergency USB power bank that runs on 4 AA batteries, and the Chord 421.779UK is a 10,000mAh power bank with two 9V outputs for effect pedals. The Mercury 600.095UK digital and 600.098UK analogue testers measure cells under load.

Frequently asked questions

Which battery does an Ajax hub take?

Match the battery to the hub model. The Ajax internal batteries 149035.375.WH (white) and 149036.375.BL (black) give the Superior Hub G3 Jeweller and ReX G3 16 hours of backup, meeting Grade 2, and the 149037.376.WH and 149038.376.BL are 60-hour 7.4V 10.4Ah versions for Grade 3. The 132037.349.NC is a 6.4V 36Ah LiFePO4 pack for the Hub BP Jeweller, and the 22259.87.NC a 3.7V 2000mAh replacement for the Ajax Hub.

Can I use rechargeable AA batteries instead of alkaline ones?

Often, but check the device first, because the voltage differs: GP ReCyko+ NiMH cells such as the 656.154UK are marked 1.2V, while alkaline AA cells such as the Energizer 656.930UK and Duracell 656.975UK are 1.5V. ReCyko+ cells such as the 656.154UK and 656.855UK stay charged when not in use and can be recharged hundreds of times. Where a device manual asks for alkaline cells, keep to alkaline.

Which Yuasa sealed lead-acid battery replaces my old one?

Match the voltage, the capacity and the terminals. The Yuasa NP17-12I is a 12V 17Ah battery with M5 terminals (internal screw thread) that can replace the Y17-12i, NP17-12, NPG17-12 and NP17-12iFR. The NP2.1-12 has Faston F1 terminals, the NP12-12 Faston terminals, and the Y17-12 is a threaded insert version at 12V 17Ah.

Which battery does a wireless detector or keyfob take?

Use the cell the device maker specifies, usually a lithium cell listed by part number. The JCI Visonic 0-9913-N is a 3V CR123 lithium battery and the 0-9913-A a 3.6V 1/2AA lithium cell for Power Code devices; the Pyronix BATT-CR2 is a 3V CR2 for the MC2-WE and WL-WE; and the Videofied LS14500 is a 3.6V lithium thionyl chloride AA-size cell for the IMV601.

What are battery leads and harnesses for?

They connect standby batteries to a panel. The DMP 318R connects two batteries with ring-style leads and is suitable for fire applications, the 318T is a dual battery harness, and the 318EXT extends the panel battery wires by 48". Altronix BL3 leads are an 18-inch red and black pair in 18 AWG wire, and the Elmdene BATT-LEADS-X10 are intrusion battery leads with thermo resistors, ten to a pack.

How can I check whether a battery is flat?

Use a battery tester that measures the cell under load, so that it indicates the charge status accurately. The Mercury 600.095UK has an LCD that shows the power level in volts, and the 600.098UK has an analogue needle that reads good, low or replace/recharge. Both test AA, AAA, C, D and 9V PP3 batteries and button cells.
