Electric Strikes

An electric strike, or electric release, is fitted in the door frame in place of the normal strike so an access control or door entry system can release the door. The range covers ANSI, Euro and rim or surface mount releases, fail-safe and fail-secure models, monitored strikes and fire rated releases for fire doors. Brands include Adams Rite by ASSA ABLOY, STP, Abloy, Trimec and ASSA ABLOY.

Choosing Electric Strikes

Choose by how the strike behaves when power is lost, then by frame, monitoring and fire door needs.

Fail-safe or fail-secure

The RGL DS-002 is fail safe: power is applied to lock it. The ASSA ABLOY 50112020057 works the other way, opening when current is on and locking automatically when current is off. The ASSA ABLOY 50382005100 can be set either way, as fail locked or fail unlocked, and the STP STP-ER310L, STP-GK1800-2P and Trimec 112002-000 are also selectable in the field, while the CDVI GAEIR-24 is fail safe and the CDVI GAER24CC is fail secure.

Frames and doors

The Adams Rite 7101-340-628 has a radiused faceplate for the rounded nose of the inactive leaf of paired doors, and its compact mechanism fits an aluminium jamb section as shallow as 44.45mm. The Adams Rite 7108-315-628 suits aluminium, timber and steel doors where conformance to EN 1125 or EN 179 is required. The STP STP-ER310L is recommended for timber door frames and the STP STP-ER310S for metal door frames, and the CDVI SIR24 is a narrow strike suitable for UPVC doors and multipoint locking.

Monitoring

The STP STP-GK700 is dual monitored, with lock monitoring and door status monitoring contacts, and the Trimec 112100-000 is fully monitored with an integrated door position (reed) switch. The ASSA ABLOY 50382005100 has a microswitch that monitors latchbolt engagement, and the STP STP-ER310LM is a monitored 12Vdc ANSI style release with a long faceplate.

Fire doors and pre-load

The Rutland RAL900 is fire rated for use on 30min timber doors to BS1634-1, and the STP STP-GK231M-L is a fail safe Euro release that reliably unlocks even while a side load is applied to the jaw, which makes it suitable for fire doors. The Trimec 119001-010 operates under up to 25kg of pre-load on the keeper, a condition caused by pulling on a door before it unlocks, by warped or drooping doors, or by seals on fire doors.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fail-safe electric strike be switched to fail-secure?

Yes, where the model is field selectable. The STP STP-ER310L and STP-GK1800-2P are field selectable for fail-safe or fail-secure operation, the Trimec 112002-000 has a patented field selectable fail safe/fail secure mode, and the Adams Rite 7108-315-628 has a facility to change duty between fail safe and fail secure. Fixed-mode strikes include the fail safe CDVI GAEIR-24 and the fail secure CDVI GAER24CC.

What is an electric strike?

It is an electric release fitted in the door frame in place of the normal strike, so an access control or door entry system can open the door. The CQR ADCN412G mortice electric release is fitted in place of the normal strike for 12 and 24V access control and door entry systems on timber doors. Styles include the ANSI style STP-ER310L, the Euro STP-GK231M-L and the rim or surface mount STP-ER350 for night latches.

What makes an electric strike suitable for a fire door?

A fire rating or fire test, and release under load. The Rutland RAL900 is fire rated for use on a 30min timber door to BS1634-1, and the Trimec 112001-000 is a fully monitored, fire rated strike. The STP STP-GK231M-L and STP-GK231M-R are fail safe Euro releases that unlock even while a side load is applied to the jaw, which makes them suitable for fire doors, and are fire tested in accordance with BSEN 1634-1:2014 and BSEN 1363-1:2012.

What is a rim electric strike used for?

A rim electric strike is a surface-mounted release used with a rim night latch, so an access control or door entry system can release the latch. The STP STP-ER350 is a rim or surface mount release for night latch locks without a deadbolt, with a maximum latchbolt throw of 12mm. The CDVI GAEI-24, GAEIR-24 and GAER24CC EURO strikes include mortise and rim plates, and the Bell System 210 is a fail secure surface or mortice release for Yale type night latches on timber-framed doors.

How does an electric strike work?

Electrical actuation unlocks the strike's jaw, releasing the latchbolt so the door can be opened without operating the latch itself. The Adams Rite 7108-340-628 is a strike released this way. Whether power locks or releases a strike depends on its fail mode: the ASSA ABLOY 50112020057 opens when current is on and locks automatically when current is off, while the fail safe RGL DS-002 works the other way, with power applied to lock it.
