SFP Modules & Transceivers
SFP modules and transceivers are plug-in modules that add a fibre or copper Ethernet port to an SFP or SFP+ slot on a switch or media converter. This page covers 1G and 2.5G SFP and 10G SFP+ modules for multimode and singlemode fibre, bi-directional (BiDi) and CWDM types, and copper RJ-45 modules, from makers including AMG Systems, Comnet, TRENDnet, D-Link and Axis Communications.

Choosing SFP Modules & Transceivers
Choose by the speed of the slot, then by the cable or fibre and the distance, then by whether the link runs on one fibre or two.
SFP or SFP+ slot
The AMG SFP-CU-1G is compatible with most 1000BASE-X SFP ports on Ethernet switches and media converters. The AMG SFP-SM-10G-ZR80-55 is compatible with most 10GBASE-R SFP+ ports. The TRENDnet TEG-10GBSR is a 10GBASE-SR SFP+ module for an MSA compliant SFP+ slot, with throughput of up to 10.5 Gbps.
Fibre type and distance
The TEG-MGBSX is a multi-mode LC module that spans distances up to 550m, and the TEG-MGBS10 single mode LC module spans distances up to 10km. The TEG-10GBSR covers up to 300m over multi mode fibre at 850nm. For longer singlemode links, the AMG SFP-SM-10G-ZR80-55 SFP+ reaches up to 80Km.
One fibre or two
The TEG-MGBS40D3 is a bi-directional (WDM) module with a single strand LC simplex connector. The TEG-MGBS40D3 transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm over distances of up to 40km, and must be paired with the TEG-MGBS40D5 or another compatible module. The AMG SFP-CW-1G-EX40-27 is a CWDM SFP for singlemode optical fibre with industry standard 20nm wavelength spacing.
Copper in an SFP slot
The TEG-MGBRJ converts a standard SFP slot into an RJ-45 gigabit port, and the TEG-10GBRJ turns an SFP+ slot into an RJ-45 multi-gigabit port running 10G over Cat6a cabling.
| Model | Speed | Medium | Reach |

Frequently asked questions
What is an SFP module?
An SFP is a Small Form-Factor Pluggable module that adds a fibre or copper port to an SFP slot. The AMG SFP-SM-1G-BX20-31 is MSA compliant, has an industry standard LC connector, is hot pluggable for easy field replacement or upgrades, and links SFP enabled Ethernet devices to remote locations beyond the normal 100m distance limit of copper Ethernet standards.
What is a 10G SFP+ module?
A 10G SFP+ module is a plug-in transceiver that runs Ethernet at 10 gigabits per second from an SFP+ slot, over fibre or copper. The TRENDnet TEG-10GBSR is a 10GBASE-SR multimode module for distances up to 300m, the AMG SFP-SM-10G-ZR80-55 reaches up to 80Km over singlemode fibre, and the TEG-10GBRJ gives 10G speeds over Cat6a copper cabling for up to 30m.
Can an SFP slot take an RJ-45 copper cable?
Yes, with a copper SFP. The TRENDnet TEG-MGBRJ converts a standard SFP slot into an RJ-45 gigabit port. The TEG-MGBRJ supports data rates of up to 1.25Gbps and spans distances of up to 100m. The TEG-10GBRJ does the same for an SFP+ slot, connecting devices up to 30m over Cat6a cabling at 10G, and it is backwards compatible with 2.5G and 5G multi-gigabit speeds.
What is a CWDM SFP used for?
A CWDM SFP carries 1000Mb Ethernet over singlemode optical fibre on a wavelength from the industry standard CWDM set, spaced 20nm apart. The AMG SFP-CW-1G-EX40-27 is compatible with most 1000BASE-X SFP ports on switches and media converters, has LC connectors and reaches up to 40Km, and its Digital Diagnostic Monitoring reports device temperature, optical power and wavelength.
What wavelength does an SFP module use?
The wavelength differs by model. The TRENDnet TEG-10GBSR multi mode SFP+ uses 850nm, and the TEG-MGBS10/4 supports 1310nm single mode transmissions. The TEG-MGBS40D3 bi-directional module transmits at 1310nm and receives at 1550nm on a single strand, and must be paired with the TEG-MGBS40D5 or another compatible module. CWDM models such as the AMG SFP-CW-1G-EX40-27 use 20nm wavelength spacing.
