Flame Detectors

Flame detectors sense the ultraviolet or infrared radiation that flames emit, so they can raise a fire alarm on an open flame. This page has UV, single IR, dual IR, triple IR (IR3) and UV-IR flame detectors from makers including Apollo Fire, Fike, Hochiki and Kidde, plus a Takex flame sensor designed to hook into an existing intruder or CCTV system.

Choosing Flame Detectors

Choose by the radiation the detector senses, infra-red, ultraviolet or the two together, then by where it will be mounted and what it connects to.

IR flame detectors

The Hochiki DRD-E fits any of the CDX range of mounting bases, has twin LEDs for 360 degree viewing and is approved by LPCB and VdS, with Class 1 performance as defined in BS EN54-10:2002. The Kidde BG-21 has an IP66 housing and low current consumption. The Apollo Fire 55000-295APO is an XP95 Exd flame detector (IR2) and is flameproof.

Triple IR flame detectors

The Apollo Fire 55000-024APO is designed to protect indoor areas, even in dirty or smoky conditions where open flaming fires may be expected, and is a compact flame detector which fits into Discovery or XP95 bases. The Fike FIK-IR3-AS11 uses triple IR (IR3) technology and logs alarms, faults and other relevant events to non-volatile memory.

UV and UV-IR flame detectors

The Apollo Fire 55000-027MAR is a base mounted UV flame detector that responds to flames up to 25m away. The Fike FIK-UV-IR-AS11 UV-IR flame detector has a window heater to avoid condensation and icing, and a tilt mounting bracket that can be connected either above or below the detector.

Light industrial and security system models

The Notifier FSL100-UV is part of the FSL100 range of light industrial/commercial flame detectors. On the Takex FS1000E flame sensor, easy separation of the sensor unit from the base simplifies installation and maintenance, and when a battery power source is used a low battery condition is annunciated by an internal buzzer and external LED.

Frequently asked questions

What does a UV flame detector respond to?

It responds to the UV radiation emitted by flames during combustion. The Apollo Fire 55000-027MAR has a single UV sensor with a narrow spectral response, in order to discriminate between flames and most spurious sources of radiation. It responds to stationary flames with no flicker and is designed to protect enclosed indoor areas where open fires may be expected.

What are the types of IR flame detector?

IR flame detectors use one, two or three infrared sensors (single IR, dual IR or triple IR), and multi-sensor types compare IR wavelengths to tell flames from other radiation. The Hochiki DRD-E uses single IR technology, the Kidde BG-21 is a dual IR detector, and the Apollo Fire 55000-024APO is an IR3 detector whose three IR sensors respond to different IR wavelengths.

Which flame detector combines UV and IR sensing?

A UV-IR flame detector combines ultraviolet and infrared sensors in one detector. The Fike FIK-UV-IR-AS11 is a UV-IR detector for hydrocarbon fires, visible and non-visible, and for hydrogen fires, and its UV and IR warning levels give a 0-20mA current output warning when elevated UV or IR radiation is detected.

How does a flame detector tell a flame from other sources of radiation?

By the flicker or the wavelengths of the radiation it receives. The Apollo Fire 55000-020APO is sensitive to low frequency, flickering infra-red radiation emitted by flames during combustion, and detects through films of oil, dust, water and ice. The three IR sensors of the Apollo Fire 55000-024APO respond to different IR wavelengths in order to discriminate between flames and spurious sources of radiation.

What is a flame detector and what does it detect?

It is a detector that responds to open flames, whether large flames or the flame of a cigarette lighter, according to the model. The Apollo Fire 55000-020APO is designed to protect areas where open flaming fires may be expected, the Kidde BG-21 is a point flame detector for fires involving combustion of carbonaceous materials, and the Hochiki DRD-E is designed for internal use to detect large flames. The Takex FS1000E flame sensor brings attention to the use of cigarette lighters, matches and other open flames.
