Mains & Flex Cable

Mains flex is flexible cable for connecting appliances and light electrical equipment to the mains supply. This page holds round and flat PVC flex in 2 and 3 core, such as 2192Y and 3183Y types, in white or black, LSZH flex and YY control flex, from Securi-Flex and Mercury, with SFX Cables twin flex.

300/300V and 300/500V flex

The Mercury 804.326UK is 2182Y 2 core round PVC flex at 300/300V (HO3VV-F2), rated 6A, and the 804.395UK is 2183Y 3 core flex at 300/300V (HO3VV-F3), rated 3A. The 804.329UK is 3182Y 2 core flex at 300/500V (HO5VV-F2), rated 10A, and the 804.350UK is 3183Y 3 core flex at 300/500V (HO5VV-F3), rated 15A. The 804.326UK, 804.395UK, 804.329UK and 804.350UK are BSI approved to BS6500 and VDE approved.

Current rating by conductor size

In Mercury PVC flex, the 0.5mm² 804.362UK is rated 3.0A max, the 0.75mm² 804.380UK 6A, the 1.0mm² 804.332UK 10A and the 1.25mm² 804.404UK 13A. The SFX MF0.5 and MF1 are light duty PVC flex with stranded bare copper conductors, rated 300/300V to BS6500.

Flat and oval flex

The Securi-Flex SFX/2192Y-2C-0.5-PVC-BLK-U-100 is a light duty flat H03 cable for internal domestic and commercial office buildings, for low voltage applications under low mechanical stress. The Mercury 804.365UK is 2192Y oval flex at 300/300V (HO3VVH2-F2), rated 3A.

H05 and LSZH flex

The Securi-Flex SFX/3182B-2C-0.75-LSZH-BLK-U-100 belongs to the 318-B mains flex range, known as H05 under the Harmonized European Standard; it is rated 300/500V, with an LSZH sheath, fine stranded copper (Class 5) conductors and a temperature range of -40°C to +70°C, for interior installation where cable flexibility is required. The SFX/3182Y-2C-1.0-PVC-WHT-U-100 is 1.0mm² flex to the H05VV-F standard in white PVC.

YY control flex

The Securi-Flex SFX/YY-2C-0.75-LSZH-GRY-NBR-U-100 is YY control flex, often used in assembly lines under light mechanical and environmental stresses. It is unshielded, which makes it more flexible, and it has numbered core marking and a grey LSZH sheath.

Can mains flex be used outdoors?

Yes, some can, such as YY control flex when it is protected from UV light, but light-duty flex is made for indoor use. The Securi-Flex SFX/YY-2C-0.75-LSZH-GRY-NBR-U-100 is often used in internal, dry environments but can be installed externally when protected against UV light. The SFX MF1 twin flex is not suitable for outdoor use, and the Securi-Flex SFX/2192Y-2C-0.75-PVC-BLK-U-100 is designed for internal domestic and commercial office buildings.

Which standards does 3183Y flex meet?

It can be BSI approved to BS 6500, the British Standard for flexible cords with 300/300V and 300/500V ratings, and some versions are also VDE approved. The Mercury 804.341UK, 804.347UK, 804.350UK and 804.404UK are 3-core round PVC 3183Y flexes rated 300/500V, BSI approved to BS6500 and VDE approved. The 804.350UK is designated HO5VV-F3 and rated 15A.

Is the current rating of a flex a maximum?

Yes, a flex's current rating is the maximum current it is suitable to carry, so choose one rated at or above the appliance's load. The Mercury 804.347UK 3183Y is rated for a maximum current of 15A, the 804.398UK 2183Y has a 6A maximum, and the 804.396UK 2183Y on a 50m reel a 3A maximum. The 804.365UK 2192Y oval flex is rated 3A max.

What is YY control flex used for?

It links control and measuring equipment in processing and production systems, such as assembly lines, under light mechanical and environmental stress. The Securi-Flex SFX/YY-3C-1.5-LSZH-GRY-NBR-U-100 is a 3-core YY control flex with a grey LSZH sheath and numbered core marking, rated CPR Cca. It is unshielded, which makes it more flexible, and the SFX/YY-2C-0.75-LSZH-GRY-NBR-U-100 is a 2-core version.

Does H05 flex come with an LSZH sheath?

Yes, as well as PVC. The Securi-Flex SFX/3182B-2C-0.75-LSZH-WHT-U-100 belongs to the 318-B mains flex range, known as H05 under the Harmonized European Standard, and has a white LSZH sheath, fine stranded copper (Class 5) conductors and a temperature range of -40°C to +70°C.
