ColorVu keeps images in full colour after dark by using white-light or hybrid illumination at the camera. DarkFighter uses a sensitive sensor to hold detail in very low light without adding visible light. Choose ColorVu where colour matters at night, such as identifying vehicles.

AcuSense filters motion alerts to people and vehicles, so rain, foliage and animals trigger far fewer false alarms and a recorder can be searched by target. Models such as the DS-2CD2143G2-IU dome and many bullets and turrets in this range carry AcuSense, often combined with ColorVu or DarkFighter.

Choose IP for a new install with network cable: the camera connects to an NVR, often over PoE. Choose TurboHD analogue to reuse existing coaxial cable to a DVR; PoC models also take power over the coax, which saves a separate power supply at the camera.

Covering a wide area from one position. Panoramic models such as the DS-2CD2366G2P-ISU/SL give a 180 degree view along a wall, and fisheye cameras such as the 12 MP DS-2CD63C5G1-IVS see a whole room from the ceiling, replacing several fixed cameras and the cabling they need.

It is recommended wherever cable joints would otherwise sit exposed to weather. Hikvision junction boxes such as the DS-1280ZJ-DM21 for dome cameras hold the connections behind the camera and give a neat mounting on walls and soffits, and wall-mount brackets such as the DS-1272ZJ-110B suit domes on a vertical surface.

Choose by where the camera goes. Turrets suit walls and soffits, domes suit ceilings and positions within reach, and bullets reach further along a driveway or car park. Fisheye and panoramic models cover a whole room or yard from one point, and PTZ cameras add pan, tilt and optical zoom.
