Access Control Modules & Expanders

Access control modules and expanders add inputs, outputs, readers and doors to the door controllers of an access control system. Types include input/output boards, relay and output expanders, interlock controllers, reader interfaces, lift interfaces and door expansion modules, from brands including CDVI, Kantech, Paxton Access and Videx. The Kantech KT-MOD-IO16, for example, adds 16 input and output terminals to a Kantech door controller.

Choosing Access Control Modules & Expanders

Begin with the controller the module has to work with, then choose what it adds: inputs and outputs, lift control, an interlock, a reader interface or more doors.

Input, output and relay expanders

The Kantech KT-MOD-IO16 has sixteen terminals for use as inputs or outputs, configurable in lots of 4, with a total of 256 inputs and 256 outputs per KT controller. The KT-MOD-INP16 adds 16 zone inputs to KT-400 systems, and the KT-MOD-REL8 is an 8-relay expansion module for the KT-400. The Paxton 489-710 I/O board connects directly to a LAN/WAN, and the Honeywell PW7K1OUT is an input/output module for the Pro-Watch IP based controller.

Lift control

The Acre 6FL7820-8AE07-1L is a high-level elevator interface that links a SiPass integrated system with an elevator management system to control access to floors. The Kantech KT-MOD-OUT16 has 16 terminals for lift control.

Interlocks and door control

The CDVI ICM-2 can run 2 doors as a standard airlock or with an auto-lock function, and it has a manual override. The Hikvision DS-K2M062 door control unit sits between the access control terminal and the lock and takes its commands over RS-485.

Readers, PoE and networking

The Acre V6FL7820-8CA16 interface module supports an entry reader and an exit reader to control a door from both sides, and has an IP66 ABS housing. The TDSi 5002-6005 door expansion module uses RS-485 for connection to its master unit and adds 4 reader channels. The Nortech TCP/IP-220 fits a CRC220 or CRC221 door controller and serves a further 31 door controllers over an RS485 bus.

Alarm and CCTV integration

The Paxton 010-203 alarm connector has 2 inputs for monitoring and 1 output for arming or disarming an intruder alarm. The CDVI AVISION links Hikvision, Dahua and ONVIF cameras to ATRIUM access control, showing up to four channels at any one time.

What does an access control I/O module do?

It adds inputs and outputs to a door controller. The Kantech KT-MOD-IO16 expands the input and output functionality of a KT-1 or KT-400 door controller for applications including alarm monitoring and elevator control. The Paxton 489-710 has 4 inputs and 4 outputs set up with Net2 triggers and actions, and the Paxton 010-266 has 8 inputs and 4 relay outputs and is powered by a Paxton10 door controller, so no external power supply is required.

Can access control restrict which floors a card can reach?

Yes, lift access control links the access system to the lift controls, so cardholders reach just the floors they are allowed, at the permitted times. The Kantech KT-MOD-OUT16 has 16 terminals for lift control, and the Paxton 010-266 can be used to control lifts.

How does a two door interlock work?

A two door interlock keeps one door locked while the other is open, so the two doors of an airlock are never open at the same time. In standard operation of the CDVI ICM-2, if one door is open the locked door cannot be accessed until both are closed, and in auto-lock operation one door is locked only when the other is opened. The ICM-2 works with normally-open or normally-closed door contacts and has a manual override.

What is OSDP access control?

OSDP access control connects card readers to the door controller using the OSDP protocol over RS-485 wiring. The DMP 734N-POE access control module supports OSDP readers, works with proximity and smartcard readers and supports up to eight card formats. The Hikvision DS-K2702X(P)(O-STD) is a 2-door access controller rather than a module, and links 4 RS-485 card readers using the OSDP protocol plus 4 Wiegand card readers.

Does a PoE+ splitter limit the I/O connectors on a Paxton10 controller?

Yes, with a PoE+ splitter only one connector of each type can be connected to the controller, while a 12V supply allows two in series. When a Paxton10 door controller runs from a PoE+ splitter, one Paxton 010-266 I/O connector can be connected, and the same limit applies to the 010-432 Output connector and the 010-890 Input connector. The 010-266 has 8 inputs and 4 relay outputs and is powered by the door controller.
