Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

A wireless fire alarm system links its alarms by radio instead of cable, so one device can raise the alarm on the others without new interconnect wiring. This page brings together Aico domestic smoke, heat, multi-sensor and carbon monoxide alarms with RadioLINK, RadioLINK+ and SmartLINK options, and Ajax Jeweller detectors, including EN54 models for commercial systems. Relay modules, a controller, range extenders and alerts for people with hearing loss complete the systems.

Choosing Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

Settle the type of system first, then choose detectors room by room, then decide on power and add-ons.

Homes or commercial systems

Aico alarms are graded for homes: mains models such as the Ei3016 are Grade D1, and sealed-battery models such as the Ei650iRF are Grade F1. Ajax EN54 FireProtect detectors such as the 119921.275.WH1 are addressable devices that report over the Jeweller radio protocol to Ajax control and indicating equipment, and the 135975.358.WH1 range extender can link to it over Ethernet.

How the alarms link

The Ei168RC base adds RadioLINK to Aico 140e Series mains alarms such as the Ei146e and Ei144e. Battery alarms such as the Ei650iRF have RadioLINK+ built in, while the Ei3024 connects wirelessly through the Ei3000MRF module, sold separately. Ajax detectors report through an Ajax hub, and the FireProtect 2 RB adds a fallback direct detector-to-detector interconnect.

Choosing the detector

Optical smoke alarms such as the Ei146e pick up slow, smouldering fires in hallways, landings and bedrooms. Heat alarms such as the Ei144e trigger at 58°C, so steam and cooking fumes in kitchens and garages do not set them off. The Ei660iRF multi-sensor combines optical and heat sensing for flaming and smouldering fires, and the Ei3028 pairs heat with carbon monoxide detection.

Power and extra alerts

The Ei146e is mains powered with a replaceable 9V alkaline battery backup, while the Ei650iRF runs on a sealed 10-year lithium battery with no wiring. The Ei171RF strobe gives a visual warning for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and drives the Ei174 vibrating pillow pad.

Frequently asked questions

How does a wireless fire alarm system work?

The alarms are linked by radio, so a fire detected by one can sound the alarm on the others without interconnecting cable. Aico RadioLINK uses a mesh network on 868.499 MHz, as on the Ei168RC base. Ajax detectors report over the two-way Jeweller protocol to an Ajax hub, and on the FireProtect 2 RB Heat/CO alarms are relayed across the system within the hub polling interval.

Which wireless fire alarms suit a home?

Choose Aico domestic alarms for a home. Battery models with RadioLINK+ built in, such as the Ei650iRF optical smoke alarm and the Ei630iRF heat alarm, need no wiring and are Grade F1. Mains alarms such as the Ei146e, which is Grade D2, can be linked by radio when fitted on the Ei168RC RadioLINK base instead of running interconnect cable.

Is there a wireless fire alarm option for commercial buildings?

Yes, Ajax EN54 FireProtect detectors such as the 119921.275.WH1 smoke detector are addressable wireless devices for EN54 fire systems, reporting over Jeweller to compatible Ajax control equipment. The 119918.273.BL1 is an EN54-5 point heat detector, and the 135976.358.BL1 range extender keeps EN54 Line devices connected across a large or complex facility.

How many Aico alarms can be linked in one system?

Plan an Aico radio-linked system around a limit of 12 devices. The Ei168RC RadioLINK base supports up to 12 RadioLINK devices. The Ei128R relay module has a system capacity of 12 interconnected devices too. Count the smoke, heat and CO alarms, the controller, any strobe and any relay module within that number.

Should I fit a smoke alarm or a heat alarm in the kitchen?

Fit a heat alarm, because steam and cooking fumes can set off a smoke alarm. The Ei144e, Ei3014 and Ei630iRF use a thermistor sensor that triggers at 58°C, and the Ei3028 adds carbon monoxide detection for a kitchen or garage. On EN54 systems, the Ajax FireProtect heat detectors are intended for places where smoke detection is unsuitable.

Can carbon monoxide alarms join the wireless system?

Yes, carbon monoxide alarms can share the radio link with the fire alarms. The Ei208WRF is a battery CO alarm with RadioLINK+ built in and a sealed 10-year lithium battery, and the Ei3018 mains CO alarm connects through the Ei3000MRF module. The Ei3028 combines heat and CO detection in one mains alarm for a kitchen or garage.

Are there wireless fire alarms for people who are deaf or hard of hearing?

Yes, the Ei171RF RadioLINK strobe light gives a visual warning when an alarm is triggered in a RadioLINK system. It uses a Xenon strobe with a 0.8Hz flash rate and is mains powered with a rechargeable battery backup. The Ei174 vibrating pillow pad plugs into it and pulses strongly to wake someone who is asleep.

How do I test or silence linked alarms from one place?

Use the Ei450 RadioLINK alarm controller. This wall-mounted switch lets you test the alarms, locate the one that triggered and silence nuisance alarms from a central point, with red and amber LEDs for fire and CO activations. The Ei450 runs on a sealed 10-year lithium cell and pairs with the system by House Coding, so no wiring is needed.

Can I add wireless interconnection to existing wired alarms?

Yes, Aico 140e Series mains alarms can be upgraded with the Ei168RC RadioLINK base. It is a mains-powered easi-fit base plate with a rechargeable lithium backup battery, and it links alarms such as the Ei146e and Ei144e by radio. It suits retrofits and hybrid systems, turning a wired system wireless with minimal disruption.

Can a fire alarm trigger other equipment?

Yes, through an Aico relay module. The Ei128R and Ei128RBU switch volt-free NO/NC contacts rated 240V AC / 5A when an interconnected Aico alarm sounds, in pulse or continuous mode, to start equipment such as strobes, extractor fans, telecare or warden call systems. The Ei128RBU adds a 10-year rechargeable lithium battery backup.
