Choosing Testing Accessories & Leads
Start from the job in hand: taking measurements with a meter, proving whether a cable is live, checking a socket after fitting, or setting up a detector.
Test leads and crocodile clips
The Mercury 600.708UK is a pair of red and black multimeter test leads for measurements up to 1000V and 20A. The Mercury 780.011UK is a set of 10 test leads in five colours, red, black, green, yellow and white, two of each. Every lead in the set is 500 mm long with soft plastic insulated 25mm crocodile clips on both ends.
Voltage testers
The Knightsbridge TE1 is an IP64 CAT III 2-pole tester that measures voltages from 12 to 690V AC/DC on an LED and LCD display. It has a self-proving function, a built-in torch, auto power on/off and probe covers, is certified to EN 61243-3, and needs 2 x AAA batteries, not included. The Mercury 710.030UK is a non-contact voltage test pen with a 90-1000VAC test range. It beeps and flashes red when held within 1cm of a live source, has a switchable torch LED, and requires 2x AAA batteries, which are supplied.
Socket tester
The Knightsbridge TE3 is a compact, mains powered BS 1363 socket tester for testing sockets after fitting. It tests for common wiring faults and gives an easy to read diagnosis on a clear fault display.
Walk tester for D-TECT detectors
The GJD380 walk tester is a tool for installing GJD D-TECT systems. It confirms detection with a sound and a bright white LED, which helps with positioning during long-range setup. It runs on a 9V PP3 battery, not included, and the GJD380 works from -20°C to +55°C.

Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in replacement multimeter test leads?
Check the maximum voltage and current the leads are rated for, and make sure they cover what you will measure. The Mercury 600.708UK is a pair of red and black test leads for measurements up to 1000V and 20A. For clip-on connections, the Mercury 780.011UK set has ten 500 mm leads with soft plastic insulated 25mm crocodile clips on both ends.
How many leads are in a crocodile clip lead set?
It depends on the set, so check the number of leads in the set before you buy. The Mercury 780.011UK set has 10 leads, two in each of five colours: red, black, green, yellow and white. Each lead is 500 mm long, with soft plastic insulation and a soft plastic insulated 25mm crocodile clip on each end.
Should I use a two pole or non-contact tester?
It depends on the job: a two pole tester measures voltage between two probes, while a non-contact tester detects AC voltage without touching the conductor. The Knightsbridge TE1 measures 12 to 690V AC/DC on an LED and LCD display and is certified to EN 61243-3. The Mercury 710.030UK pen beeps and flashes red within 1cm of a live source across a 90-1000VAC range, and both have a torch.
What are testing accessories?
Testing accessories are the leads, clips and testers used with meters and for checking cables, sockets and detectors. From Mercury come the 600.708UK red and black multimeter leads, the 780.011UK set of ten crocodile clip leads and the 710.030UK non-contact voltage test pen, and from Knightsbridge the TE1 2-pole voltage tester and the TE3 BS 1363 socket tester. The GJD380 walk tester is for installing GJD D-TECT systems.
How do I check a socket for wiring faults after fitting it?
Plug in a socket tester, which checks the socket for common wiring faults and shows the result on its display. The Knightsbridge TE3 is a mains powered BS 1363 socket tester made for testing sockets after fitting, with a clear fault display and an easy to read diagnosis. It is a compact unit certified to EN 61326 and EN 61000.
What does a PIR walk tester do?
A PIR walk tester confirms when a detector picks up movement, with a sound or a light, so the detector can be positioned and aligned during setup. The GJD380 gives audible confirmation of detection with a bright white LED when installing GJD D-TECT systems. It needs a 9V PP3 battery, not included, and draws 0.5mA on standby and 30mA when operating.
