Electric Deadbolts
Electric deadbolts lock a door or gate with a bolt driven by a solenoid or a motor, and they come in fail safe or fail secure versions. This page has solenoid bolts for flush, mortice and surface mounting, double action locks, an electric drop bolt, motorised gate deadbolts, an electric hook lock and mechanical mortice deadlocks, from brands including STP, Adams Rite by ASSA ABLOY, CDVI, Abloy and RGL Electronics.

Choosing Electric Deadbolts
Decide first how the door must behave when the power fails, then check how the bolt mounts and what it monitors.
Fail safe and fail secure
The STP STP-EB133 is fail safe, which means power to lock: its fail safe operation allows egress in the event of power failure. The STP STP-SB262 is fail-safe too, unlocked with no power, and is for double action doors and applications where maglocks or releases are impractical. The CDVI DX22 is a fail secure solenoid bolt lock with a follower and provision for a EURO-cylinder override. The CDVI SDA-30 is a fail secure double action lock with a 30mm backset.
Mounting
The STP STP-EB133 is for installation in timber or metal doors and door frames, and includes fixing plates for flush mounting in hollow metal frames. The STP STP-EB150 is a compact bolt for mortice installation where space is limited and light usage is expected. The STP STP-EB165 is a surface mount solenoid bolt that is suitable for double action doors. The STP STP-EB250 is a flush mount solenoid bolt with a bolt diameter of 15mm. The STP STP-EB170 electric drop bolt allows horizontal or vertical installation.
Monitoring and re-lock delay
The STP STP-EB133 has a door status contact that monitors whether the door is open or closed, and a re-lock delay of 0 seconds or 3 seconds, selectable by jumper setting. The STP STP-EB150 has door position monitoring and a variable re-lock delay of 0, 3, 6 or 9 seconds. On the STP STP-EB250, the adjustable auto-lock delay allows the door time to settle before trying to lock.
Gates and hook locks
The RGL Electronics MED-57K is a motorised electric deadbolt that is non-handed, with a circular key cylinder to fit a door thickness of 40-90mm. The Trimec 116002-010 (ES6000) is an electric hook lock rather than a deadbolt: it is suitable for swinging and sliding doors and has a 680kg holding force.

Frequently asked questions
Where can a solenoid bolt be fitted?
In a door or its frame, by flush, mortice or surface mounting, by model. The STP STP-EB133 is for installation in timber or metal doors and door frames and includes fixing plates for flush mounting in hollow metal frames. The STP STP-EB165 is a surface mount solenoid bolt, the STP STP-EB250 is a flush mount solenoid bolt, and the STP STP-SB262 is suitable for mortice installation in either the horizontal or vertical orientation.
What voltage and current does an electric bolt lock draw?
Electric bolt locks are often 12V DC devices, and a solenoid bolt can draw more current while activating than while holding. The STP STP-EB250 is a 12Vdc bolt with an activating current of 900mAmp and a holding current of 200mAmp. The CDVI SDA-25 operates on 12V DC with a low power consumption of 255mA, and the Trimec 116002-010 hook lock selects 12 to 30Vdc automatically.
Which solenoid bolt locks need power to lock?
Fail safe solenoid bolt locks need power to lock, so the door is unlocked when the power fails. The STP STP-EB133, STP-EB150, STP-EB165 and STP-EB180 are fail safe (power to lock), and the STP-SB262 is fail-safe, unlocked with no power. The CDVI DX22 solenoid bolt and the CDVI SDA-30 double action lock are fail secure instead.
Can a drop bolt be installed horizontally as well as vertically?
Yes, some electric drop bolts can be fitted horizontally or vertically, so check that the bolt suits your orientation before fitting. The STP STP-EB170 electric drop bolt allows horizontal or vertical installation and is for single or double action doors. The STP STP-SB262 bolt is likewise suitable for mortice installation in either the horizontal or vertical orientation.
Can a motorised deadbolt be used on an external gate?
Yes, if it is designed for external gates and carries an IP rating for dust and water, as defined in IEC 60529. The RGL Electronics MED-57 and MED-57K are motorised electric deadbolts for use with external gates, operating at 12VDC with an IP57 rating. The MED-57 and MED-57K are both non-handed, so they can be used on the left or right side, and fit a door thickness of 40-90mm.
