Choosing Spotlights & Downlights
Choose a downlight by its light source, whether the ceiling needs a fire-rated fitting and how wet the room gets.
GU10 fittings or integrated LED
A GU10 downlight takes a separate lamp, so the bulb sets the colour and brightness; Knightsbridge pairs ranges such as Ambar, Dipa, Odina and Oran with its GU10 light sources, including dimmable and SmartKnight options. Integrated LED downlights have the light source built in: the SpektroLED Evo SPKEVF switches between 5W and 7W and between 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K, and the RenuLED RE6CTF between 3000K, 4000K and 6500K.
Fire-rated downlights
The VFCFC is fire-rated for 30, 60 and 90 minutes in solid timber and 30 minutes in web-joist and I-joist, and the VFRDGICW is tested to BS476 Part 21 & 23 and complies with Building Regulations Part B (Fire Safety). Many are IC rated for insulation contact, some with conditions: the VFCF fittings are IC rated when used with a maximum 6W LED lamp.
Bathrooms and wet areas
For bathrooms, choose an IP65 fitting. The RDSHW and RDSHCBR are IP65 GU10 downlights for bathrooms and shower rooms with a 35W maximum lamp, and the VFRSHGICW is an IP65 fire-rated shower downlight. Several IP65 models, such as the VFCFIPC and SPKEVTAB, are rated IP65 from below and IP20 from above.
Commercial downlights
The ASHA downlights, such as the AS8CWA and AS30CWA, are IP54 with a switch for 3000K, 4000K or 5700K. The SARA and SEREN downlights have three selectable wattages and 3000K, 4000K or 5000K; the SA3040CAD and SER3040AD add 0-10V dimming, and the SA1525CDALI and SER3040DALI use DALI2 control gear.
Emergency downlights
The EMPOWER4 and ENM5C use a LiFePO4 lithium battery for a minimum of 3 hours, and the EMPOWER4ST and EMPOWERSTL add an automatic self-test.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a GU10 downlight or an integrated LED downlight?
Choose GU10 if you want to change the bulb yourself, and integrated LED if you want the light source built into the fitting. GU10 fittings such as the Dipa DIB1TSW take a separate lamp, including Knightsbridge dimmable and SmartKnight GU10 lamps. Integrated models such as the SpektroLED Evo SPKEVTW and RenuLED RE6CTF have selectable colour temperatures, and the SPKEVTW a selectable 5W or 7W output.
Do I need a fire-rated downlight?
Use a fire-rated downlight where the ceiling has to keep its fire rating, and match the rating to your ceiling type. The VFCFC is rated for 30, 60 and 90 minutes in solid timber and 30 minutes in web-joist and I-joist ceilings, and the VFRDGICW is tested to BS476 Part 21 and 23. The SPKEVTW is fire-rated for 30/60/90 minutes for solid timber, web joist and I-joist installations.
What does IC rated mean on a downlight?
IC rated means the downlight is designed for insulation contact, so ceiling insulation can be in contact with it. The RE6CTT is IC-rated for safe insulation contact and the VFRSGICB is insulation compatible. Some ratings come with conditions: VFCF fittings such as the VFCFTW are IC rated when used with a maximum 6W LED lamp, and the FireNova FRNTAB is IC-rated with a suitable accessory sold separately.
Which downlights can I use in a bathroom?
Use an IP65 downlight in a bathroom or shower area. The RDSHW and RDSHCBR are IP65 GU10 downlights designed for bathrooms and shower rooms with a 35W maximum lamp, the VFRSHGICW is an IP65 fire-rated shower downlight, and the SpektroLED Evo SPKEVF is IP65 rated for wet and dry locations. Check the IP rating your bathroom zone needs before you choose.
Can I change the colour temperature of a downlight?
Yes, many integrated LED downlights here let you select it on the fitting. The ASHA AS8CWA offers 3000K, 4000K or 5700K via a switch on the fitting, the SEREN SER712 offers 3000K, 4000K and 5000K, and the SpektroLED Evo SPKEVF offers 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K. With a GU10 fitting, the colour temperature depends on the lamp you fit.
How long do the emergency downlights run on battery?
The EMPOWER4, EMPOWER4W, ENM5C and EMPOWERSTL emergency downlights give a minimum of 3 hours of light from LiFePO4 lithium batteries. The EMPOWER4 runs maintained or non-maintained and includes a corridor lens accessory, while the EMPOWERSTL is non-maintained with an integral auto test facility complying with EN 62034.
