Batten & Linear

LED battens are long, slim fittings that replace fluorescent tube battens on ceilings and walls in commercial, industrial and domestic spaces. This collection holds Knightsbridge battens from 2ft to 6ft: standard and high-lumen BATS and T8BLED models, BATM modular battens, CCT and wattage adjustable BATSC battens with sensor, emergency or DALI versions, IP65 Torlan, TorlanECO and NCLB non-corrosive fittings, and T8LB LED-ready fittings for T8 LED tubes.

Choosing Batten & Linear

Choose a batten by length and light output first, then by what the space needs: a sensor, emergency backup, adjustable colour or protection from water and dust.

Length and output

Lengths here are 2ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft. As a guide, the 2ft BATM2 gives 1400lm from 10W, the 4ft BATS4 2625lm from 22W and the 6ft BATS6 4875lm from 42W. For more light, the 5ft BATS5UHL gives 11200lm from 83W and the 6ft BATS6UHLEM 13500lm from 100W. Most standard models give 4000K cool white light; the TorlanECO TORE5K18 and TORE5K45 are 5700K daylight.

Modular and adjustable battens

The BATM modular battens, such as the BATM4 and BATM6, take interchangeable options including an emergency conversion kit or a microwave sensor. The BATSC battens let you set colour temperature and wattage on the fitting: the BATSCWMST6 switches between 27W (4,170lm) and 52W (7,520lm). Versions such as the BATSCWM6 add microwave presence detection, the BATSCWEM6 adds emergency backup, the BATSCWST6 adds self-test, and the BATSCDA4 uses DALI control gear.

Emergency battens

The T8BLED15EM1, T8BLED16EM1 and T8BLED25EM1 give 3-hour maintained or non-maintained operation, and the BATSCWMEM6 uses a lithium battery for a minimum 3-hour duration.

Damp and outdoor areas

Where water or dust is a concern, look for IP65. The Torlan TORCW6 is IP65 and IK08 rated for indoor and outdoor use, the TORE5K45 is IP65 with tool-less cable termination, and the TRLEDA151 is an IP65 26W fitting for a 110V-240V AC supply.

LED-ready fittings

The T8LB and NCLB fittings take a separate T8 LED self-ballasted tube, with no ballast or driver; the tube is not supplied. The NCLB fittings are IP65 non-corrosive polycarbonate.

Frequently asked questions

Can an LED batten replace a fluorescent tube fitting?

Yes, many of these battens are made to replace conventional fluorescent fittings. Knightsbridge describes the BATS6H and BATS5UHL as ideal for replacing conventional fluorescent fixtures and the T8BLED14 as an ideal replacement for traditional T8 battens. The BATS4 is compatible with standard 600mm centres and BESA boxes, so check the fixing centres of the old fitting before you swap it.

What is an LED-ready batten fitting?

It is a batten body made to take a separate T8 LED tube, with no ballast or driver. The T8LB14, T8LB15 and T8LB16 single and T8LB24, T8LB25 and T8LB26 twin fittings are made for dedicated T8 LED self-ballasted tubes and sold in packs of 4, and the NCLB fittings do the same job in a non-corrosive polycarbonate body. The LED tube is not supplied, so choose tubes separately.

How long do the emergency battens stay lit?

Knightsbridge lists 3 hours of emergency operation for models such as the T8BLED15EM1, T8BLED16EM1 and T8BLED25EM1, which run maintained or non-maintained. The BATSCWEM6 and BATSCWMEM6 use a lithium battery for a minimum 3-hour duration, and the Torlan TORCWST6 and TORCWMST6 have a 3-hour self-test emergency mode with a LiFePO4 battery.

What does CCT adjustable mean on a batten?

It means you can set the colour temperature of the light on the fitting itself. The BATSC and Torlan TORC battens here switch between 3000K, 4000K and 5700K, and the TORCWST6 does it with internal switches. Many also let you pick one of two wattages, such as 30W or 60W on the TORCW6, which gives 4,750lm or 8,660lm.

What does a microwave sensor batten do?

It uses microwave presence detection to control the light, which Knightsbridge presents as an energy saving. The BATSCWM4, BATSCWM6 and BATSCWMST6 have microwave presence detection with adjustable settings, and the Torlan TORCWMEM4 and TORCWMST6 have a fully adjustable microwave sensor. The BATM modular battens can take a microwave sensor as an option.

Which battens can I use in damp or outdoor areas?

Choose an IP65 fitting, such as a Torlan TORC, TorlanECO TORE, TRLEDA151 or NCLB model. Knightsbridge describes the Torlan TORCW6 and the TorlanECO TORE5K45 for indoor and outdoor applications, and the TORCW6 adds an IK08 impact rating. IP20 battens such as the BATS6H and T8BLED16 are described for indoor use.
