Adhesives & Sealants

Adhesives and sealants are the glues, tapes and solvents used to bond, seal, hold and mask, or to lift old labels. The page holds Ultra Tape gaffa, double sided, masking and picture frame tapes, Kontakt Chemie Label Off 50 adhesive remover, a Knightsbridge silicone glue for LED flex and a LYYT waterproof RTV silicone glue.

Choosing Adhesives & Sealants

Choose by the job: bonding or sealing, holding with tape, or removing an old adhesive.

Silicone glue

The LYYT 153.627UK is a 22g RTV silicone glue that cures at room temperature, with no heat or special equipment, to a flexible rubber-like material that absorbs movement without cracking. It is waterproof and weatherproof for joints exposed to water or outdoor elements, protects cables and components from moisture and vibration, and adheres to materials including glass, ceramics and plastics. The Knightsbridge LFCONIPG is a 10ml clear silicone glue for LED flexible strips and household jobs, compliant with UKCA and CE.

Tapes

The Ultra Tape 853.501UK in black and 853.502UK in silver are gaffa tapes 48mm wide and 50m long, water resistant, easy to tear, with a medium strength adhesive and 35 mesh. The 799.002UK double sided tape is clear, measures 50mm x 33m and has a peel-away liner for joining most materials. The 799.008UK is a self adhesive craft paper tape 48mm wide by 50 metres long that gives an attractive finish to the backs of picture frames. The 710.315UK Rhino masking tape is low tack and pressure sensitive, easy to reposition and remove, and suited to delicate surfaces.

Removing adhesive

Kontakt Chemie Label Off 50 dissolves the adhesive on paper self-adhesive labels and neutralises its grip, so labels separate without the scratches that scraping can leave. It works on glass, china, metal, paper, carton and wood among other surfaces, and also lifts natural greases, resins and fingerprints. It comes as the 701.220UK in 100ml and the 701.221UK in 200ml.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right sealant for metal to metal joints?

For close-fitting metal to metal joints such as flanges and threads, an anaerobic sealant is usually used, as it cures once air is shut out. Where the joint flexes, has a gap or faces the weather, a flexible RTV silicone sealant often works better. Clean and degrease the metal faces before applying either type, and allow the full cure time before use.

What is an adhesive?

An adhesive is a substance that bonds two surfaces together, usually by wetting them and then curing or drying into a solid or flexible layer. Common types include silicone glues, superglues, epoxies and the pressure-sensitive adhesive on tapes. Choose by the materials, the strength needed and whether the joint must stay flexible or waterproof. The range here includes silicone glues and several adhesive tapes.

How do you remove adhesive?

To remove adhesive, soften it with a solvent-based adhesive remover, give it a few moments to work, then lift the label or residue away. Scraping hard can scratch glass, metal or wood, so a remover that dissolves the glue is gentler. Test it on a hidden spot first, especially on plastic or painted surfaces. The range here includes a label and adhesive remover.
