Lamp Holders & Fittings

Lamp holders and fittings are the parts that hold a bulb and connect it to the wiring. This range covers pre-wired pendant sets, batten holders, cord grip lampholders and ceiling roses, GU10 and MR16 lampholders on fly leads, and socket converters that let a lamp with one cap fit a holder made for another. Alongside them are vintage pendant cord sets, hole converter kits for downlights and track adaptors for hanging a pendant from a lighting track.

Choosing Lamp Holders & Fittings

Identify the lamp cap first, such as B22, E27, E14, GU10, MR16 or G9, then how the holder is fixed.

Pendant sets and cord sets

A pendant set is a lampholder pre-wired on a flex to a ceiling rose. Knightsbridge 8270 contemporary and 8271 vintage E27 sets have a fixed drop or a 1.8m drop, the longer versions marked L in the code, such as the 8271LBC, and most 8271 sets take a lampshade with a 42mm internal ring. For an exposed-bulb look, LYYT cord sets such as the 429.502UK have a 1.8m nylon braided cable that can be cut to length inside the ceiling rose, and the quad 429.541UK hangs four E27 holders from one rose.

Batten holders, cord grips and roses

For a lamp fixed straight to the ceiling, a batten holder such as the SN8200 (home office skirt) or SN8210 (straight short skirt) takes a B22d lamp and is T2 rated for 100W incandescent or 8W LED. The SN8250 is a BC cord grip lampholder for the end of a pendant flex, and the SN8260 is a three-plate ceiling rose with a terminal block for 2 x 1.5mm² cable.

GU10, MR16 and converters

GU10 and MR16 lampholders connect a spotlight lamp inside a downlight. The Knightsbridge LH02 has a 260mm silicon-impregnated cable and the LH03 a bridge with a separate earth terminal, rated 50W and sold in packs of 50, while the LYYT ceramic 159.237UK (GU10) and 159.238UK (MR16) have heat-resistant 0.5mm² fly leads. LYYT socket converters such as the 401.092UK (E27 to GU10) adapt a holder to a different lamp cap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a B22 and an E27 lamp holder?

B22 is the bayonet cap (BC), which pushes in and twists to lock, while E27 is the larger Edison screw cap that screws in. The lamp must match the holder: the SN8210 batten holder is B22d, while pendant sets such as the 8270LAB are E27. If the lamp you want has the other cap, a LYYT converter such as the 401.087UK changes an Edison screw fitting to a bayonet cap fitting.

What wattage lamp can I use in these holders?

Stay within the rating printed for the holder. The SN8200, SN8210 and SN8230 batten holders, the SN8250 cord grip and the SN8270 and SN8280 pendant sets are T2 rated for 100W incandescent or 8W LED. The LH02 and LH03 GU10 lampholders are rated at 50W maximum, and LYYT socket converters such as the 401.087UK list a 60W maximum load. For an 8270 or 8271 set, read the rating on that listing.

Can I shorten the cable on a pendant set?

Yes on the LYYT vintage cord sets, whose 1.8m nylon braided cable can be cut to length and re-connected inside the ceiling rose. The quad 429.541UK and 429.543UK have four 1.8m cables to one rose, each with a rubber pad to fix it to the ceiling or a beam and space the drops. For the Knightsbridge 8270 and 8271 sets, choose a fixed-drop or a 1.8m drop version.

How do I fit a spotlight into an oversized downlight hole?

Use a hole converter kit such as the HCW, HCC or HCBC, which Knightsbridge makes for holes of 78mm to 120mm. Each kit is pressed steel with a bridge connector, and comes with a GU10 mains lampholder and a 12V MR16 low voltage lampholder, lamps not included. Choose white (HCW), polished chrome (HCC) or brushed chrome (HCBC) to suit the ceiling.

Can I use a GU10 bulb in a B22 or E27 fitting?

Yes, with a LYYT lamp socket converter: the 401.091UK changes a B22 bayonet fitting to GU10, and the 401.092UK an E27 Edison screw fitting to GU10. The 401.091UK and 401.092UK both have ceramic sockets, a 60W maximum load and conform to BS EN60238. The 401.099UK does the same for an E14 fitting. Check the extra length still fits inside the shade.

Can I hang a pendant from a lighting track?

Yes, with a Knightsbridge track adaptor such as the TRKAD1BK, which fits the TRK single track system and takes a pendant flex of 1.5mm to 6mm diameter. The TRKAD1BK carries a maximum load of 100W and a maximum weight of 5kg, and the flex is not included. The TRKAD1W and TRKAD1S are the white and satin nickel versions of the same adaptor.
