Bulkhead Lights

A bulkhead light is a surface-mounted fitting with a protective diffuser, usually sealed against dust and water, built for walls and ceilings in corridors, stairwells, entrances and outdoor areas. This range is Knightsbridge LED bulkheads from 3W to 20W, many with adjustable CCT, motion or daylight sensors, emergency backup and DALI control, plus B22 and E27 lamp-holder bulkheads, the E27PC and E27PR with prismatic diffusers, and anti-vandal eyelid casings for exposed positions.

Choosing Bulkhead Lights

Choose a bulkhead by where it will be fitted, whether it needs a sensor or emergency function, and the colour of light the area needs.

Protection

Most LED bulkheads here are IP65, sealed against dust and water jets for outdoor use; amenity bulkheads are IP54, and some sensor models IP44. The BTEV is rated IK10 for impact, and the grey TNXPROCEG anti-vandal eyelid casing is rated IK10 for exposed places.

Sensors

Sensor bulkheads include the BL12ALEDS, the BT20ACTS and SHE1BS with a microwave sensor, and the AMLEDWP with a photocell daylight sensor for exterior use. The BT20ACTS microwave sensor has adjustable lux and hold time settings.

Emergency lighting

Emergency bulkheads keep lighting during a mains failure; the BT14ACTDALIEM and EMLED1L give a 3-hour backup, and the EMLED1L runs maintained or non-maintained.

Adjustable CCT and wattage

CCT-adjustable models such as the BT14ACT switch between 3000K, 4000K and 5700K, so one fitting suits different areas. The BTEV and BTEVMWEM also select their wattage, from 9W to 18W. Chrome and black trims and bezels change the look of the same fitting, so bulkheads can match the finishes around them in a lobby or on a stair.

Frequently asked questions

What is an amenity bulkhead light?

An amenity bulkhead is a compact, low-wattage light for areas that need a modest level of light, such as porches, stairwells, walkways and bin stores. LED versions usually have a sealed body for damp or outdoor positions, and some add a sensor. The range here includes LED amenity bulkheads with standard, daylight sensor and motion sensor options.

Can LED bulkhead lights be dimmed?

Yes, some can. DALI bulkheads dim through a DALI lighting control system, while bulkheads with a lamp holder can dim when fitted with a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer. Integrated LED bulkheads without a dimming feature should not be put on a dimmer. Check the product details before choosing. The range here includes DALI and dimmable bulkheads.

How does a bulkhead light with a sensor work?

A sensor bulkhead switches itself on when it detects movement, then off again after a set time with no activity. Many also have a daylight sensor, so they stay off while it is light. Microwave sensors can detect movement through the diffuser, while PIR sensors detect body heat. The range here includes LED bulkheads with built-in sensors.

Can bulkhead lights be used outdoors?

Yes. Bulkhead lights are built for exposed and damp positions, but outdoor use needs a suitable IP rating, such as IP65 for walls exposed to rain. Look for an impact-resistant diffuser where the light is within reach of the public. Check the IP rating on the product before fitting it outside. The range here includes IP65 rated bulkheads.

What is a bulkhead light?

A bulkhead light is a robust, enclosed light fitting mounted on a wall or ceiling, usually with a sealed body and a protective diffuser. The name comes from the lights used on ships' bulkheads. They suit utility rooms, garages, stairwells and outdoor walls. The range here includes LED, emergency and sensor bulkheads.
