Control Relays
Control relays let one system switch another: an output from an alarm, fire, access control or door entry system operates a relay whose contacts control locks, gates, bells or other equipment. This page covers relay modules, relay boards, interface relays and time delay relays, from makers including Hoyles and Elmdene.

Choosing Control Relays
Choose by what the relay has to switch, what will drive it, and whether its contacts must be volt-free, delayed or individually fused.
Volt-free contacts
The Paxton Access 325-010 connects across the 12V DC lock output of a compact system and provides switched NO/NC volt-free contacts for external equipment such as roller shutters or 24v locks, up to a maximum of 40V AC/DC at 4A. The Elmdene MPR002 has 2 volt-free changeover contacts that switch up to 1A at 24V dc. The Hoyles S312N accepts voltage, logic, closed circuit and open circuit inputs and passes them on through voltage-free DPCO contacts rated at 2amp. The Ajax 64932.183.NC1 MultiRelay Fibra has four independent relays with potential-free contacts and deactivates any relay that exceeds +80°C.
Interfaces between systems
The Dantech DA220 is a 12V DC relay with DPCO contacts rated 30V DC 1A, and the Dantech DA255 has four independent SPCO relays rated 24V DC 1A; the DA220 and DA255 can act as an interface between different systems, such as intruder alarm to access control. The Elmdene FIREFOM-12-4, FIREFOM-12-8 and FIREFOM-12-12 provide 4, 8 and 12 individually fused outputs, and every output can be set to permanently on or switched via a remote signal from a fire panel. The Hoyles MG030000 turns the serial output of an MG series MULTIGUARD annunciator into 6 DPCO voltage-free relay outputs.
Time delays
The Hoyles S312T can delay its action by between about 3 and 60 seconds, set on an on board potentiometer. The Aiphone TAR4 is a temporized relay for call extension, rated 250VAC/8A for external bells.
Door entry, panel and wireless relays
The Comelit PAC 1122/A is a 12-24V DC-AC 10A relay for general uses that can be controlled directly for call repetition, and the Urmet 788/100 is a lock output relay for 2Voice and IperCom systems. On alarm and access panels, the Aritech ATS1810 adds four SPDT relay outputs. The Texecom GHF-0001 and GHG-0001 are Ricochet wireless relays.

Frequently asked questions
What is a time delay relay?
It is a relay whose action is delayed by an adjustable time after it is triggered, useful where one action must wait for another. The Hoyles S312T delays its action by between about 3 and 60 seconds, set with an on-board potentiometer. The Aiphone TAR4 has a time delay adjustable from 5 to 30 seconds and controls external bells at 250VAC/8A.
When are volt-free contacts needed?
They are needed when a switched voltage output is not suitable for the equipment being controlled, such as roller shutters or 24V locks. The Paxton Access 325-010 compact relay module is wired across a Paxton compact system's 12V DC lock output to give 1 pair of switched NO/NC volt-free contacts, for up to 40V AC/DC at 4A. The Elmdene MPR002 offers 2 volt-free changeover contacts.
What does DPCO mean on a relay?
DPCO stands for double pole change over. The Dantech DA220 is a transistor driven relay unit with DPCO contacts rated 30V DC 1A and a tamper switch. The Hoyles S342-1 is a simple double pole change over relay module, and the Hoyles S342-3B mounts three separate double pole changeover relays on a single PCB in a single-gang white ABS enclosure with a front and back-acting tamper switch.
How many outputs can a fire alarm interface relay switch?
It depends on the model, for example 4, 8 or 12 individually fused outputs that a remote signal from a fire panel can switch. The Elmdene FIREFOM-12-4, FIREFOM-12-8 and FIREFOM-12-12 provide 4, 8 and 12 individually fused outputs, each selectable as switched, permanently on or disabled. Their contacts are rated 8A at 12V dc or 4A at 24V dc, with LED indication when a relay is energised.
Can a door entry panel open a gate through a relay?
Yes, an intercom relay module lets the entrance panel open a gate or a door lock that the door entry system does not drive directly. The BTicino 346250 is a gate-opening relay module with NC/NO contacts for Linea 2000, Linea 3000 and Sfera pushbutton panels. For 2Voice and IperCom systems, the Urmet 788/100 is a lock output relay with COM, N/O and N/C contacts.
