Thermostats and controls decide when a heating system runs and how warm it keeps a room or a hot water cylinder. Most models here are Sangamo thermostats, from simple dial and mechanical stats to programmable, wireless and tamperproof versions. Choosing Thermostats & Controls

Match the control to the heating system first, then to the people who will use it and how often the settings change.

One room, one zone

For a single heating zone, a room stat on the wall is enough. The Sangamo Choice CHPRSTAT has a large temperature adjustment dial with a call for heat indication LED, and the CHPRSTATD swaps the plain dial for a large dial with a digital display, running on batteries. The CHOICE RSTAT1 is a mechanical room thermostat whose relay is rated 10 A resistive and 3 A inductive.

Setting it from a phone

The Sangamo CHPWIFI and the Fort ECSPST are Wi-Fi controlled thermostats sold with a receiver, offering remote monitoring and scheduling. The Honeywell Y6H920RW5031 kit’s smart thermostat can follow a schedule or use location-based geofencing from your smartphone, and integrates with Apple Home and Amazon Alexa.

Heating with stored hot water

The Y6H920RW5031 thermostat is suitable for Sundial S, Y and W plan stored hot water systems and has 6 on/off hot water periods kept separate from the heating. The CHSTAT3CHK controls the hot water and 2 heating zones from 2 RF programmable thermostats and a receiver with 3 independent channels. On the cylinder itself, the CHOICE CSTAT fixes with the strap and hooks provided.

Tamperproof and frost versions

Where settings should stay put, the CHPRSTATT is a tamperproof electronic thermostat and the CHOICE RSTAT1T comes complete with a tamperproof cover. The CHOICE FSTAT1 frost thermostat suits surface or switch box mounting.

Will a smart thermostat work with my boiler?

The thermostat in the Honeywell Y6H920RW5031 kit is compatible with on/off and OpenTherm appliances such as gas boilers, combi boilers and heat pumps, and it suits Sundial S, Y and W plan stored hot water systems. It can also be used as a temperature sensing device in an S or Y plan system.

Can I match a thermostat to black or silver fittings?

Yes, many Sangamo Choice models come in white, black and silver versions. The electronic CHPRSTAT is white, the CHPRSTATB black and the CHPRSTATS silver, and the digital CHPRSTATD, CHPRSTATDB and CHPRSTATDS follow the same pattern. Frost, tamperproof and wireless digital models are offered in the three finishes too, for example the CHPRSTATF, CHPRSTATFB and CHPRSTATFS.

Do the digital thermostats here run on batteries?

Some do, so check the model. The CHPRSTATD, CHPRSTATDB and CHPRSTATDS digital thermostats are battery powered with a low battery indication, and the black and silver versions come with batteries. The CHPRSTATDP and CHPRSTATDPS 7 day programmable thermostats take 4 x AAA batteries and have an operating voltage of 6 V DC.
