CQR SE/4/M/WH/865 emergency exit sign, angled view with arrow up legend

CQR LED Emergency Exit Sign, Slimline Exit Box, Arrow Up Legend, White SE/4/M/WH/865

What this exit box does

An exit box is a shallow illuminated sign showing the way out of a building. It stays lit from its own battery when the mains supply fails, so people can still read the route.

This CQR version adds a second job: a small downward light, which you can angle.

How it works

  • Maintained: a maintained fitting is lit all the time and stays lit on its battery when the mains fails.
  • Non-maintained: a non-maintained fitting stays off in normal use and only lights when the mains fails.
  • Two light sources: in emergency mode the legend and the downward light have separate outputs. The downward light is the brighter of the two, because its job is to light the route and not to be read.

Where to use it

The IP20 rating points to dry indoor areas, so bathrooms, plant areas with water and outdoor walls are outside its rating.

Exit signs usually sit at each exit and wherever the way out is not obvious. The positions come from the building's fire risk assessment, so check there first.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Viewing distance: use it as the upper limit for spacing between signs along a clear line of sight. Corners and obstructions shorten what a person can actually see.
  • Colour temperature: 6500K is a cool white light, the kind that looks slightly blue beside a warm lamp.
  • Rated life: this is a lumen maintenance figure, meaning the light output the LED is expected to hold across the rated hours.

Installing it

As a rule, a mains-fed fitting needs a competent person, and the live feed for a non-maintained sign should be taken from the local lighting circuit. Choose maintained or non-maintained before connecting it.

If the route turns, order the matching legend before fitting day, because only the arrow up comes in the box.

Planning your system

One sign rarely covers a job. Most buildings combine signs with other emergency lighting along the route, and the emergency lighting regulations set out who is responsible for it.

As a rule, allow for regular test visits as well. A monthly check and an annual full-duration test are the normal pattern, and the emergency light testing schedule explains both.
