  • Standards: electronic functions comply with EN50131-6 grades 1-4 for security applications.

Frequently asked questions

Is it EN54-4 compliant as supplied?

Only once it is installed and checked. It has the same electronics as the EN54-4/A2 certified boxed BF562-5, and full compliance with all relevant standards must be checked by the responsible person with it in a suitable enclosure.

What is the difference from the BF562-5?

This version is the PSU PCB on a metal base plate with no box. It is made to mount inside a third-party enclosure.

What size batteries can it charge?

From 2.5Ah up to 17Ah VRLA, charged to 80% capacity in 24 hours. The largest size depends on the enclosure it is mounted in.

How much load current can it supply?

Up to 4.6A or 4A, selectable, with battery charging kept on. A load above that setting temporarily disables charging, and the total output is limited to 5A.

Can the settings be changed?

Yes, with a BF423 configurator and a PC. Float voltage temperature compensation, charge rate, battery impedance and input/output settings can be set.

Can it be used on an intruder alarm?

Yes. Its electronic functions comply with EN50131-6 grades 1-4 for security applications.

C-TEC BF562-5/E encased power supply PCB, angled view

C-TEC 5 Series 24V 5A Encased Power Supply PCB BF562-5/E

Overview

This is the bare working part of a C-TEC 5 Series power supply, mounted on a Zintec base with a polycarbonate cover. It is meant for a housing of your choice rather than C-TEC's own box.

C-TEC also sells the same electronics ready boxed as the C-TEC BF562-5 power supply. The wider C-TEC fire alarm range holds the panels and devices it often powers.

How it works

A switch-mode/digital hybrid design turns mains into regulated 24V DC and charges standby batteries at the same time. It checks battery resistance, so a battery that can no longer deliver its rated current shows as a fault.

A single status LED reports by counting flashes.

  • 1 flash: mains failure.
  • 2 and 3 flashes: battery voltage low, then critical.
  • 4 and 5 flashes: charger failure, or charger OK.
  • 6, 7 and 8 flashes: no batteries fitted, battery resistance fault, or output over voltage.

Where to use it

It suits a builder fitting a supply into a custom fire or security enclosure. Because the IP rating depends on that enclosure, choose one that suits the location.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Two output limits: the first is the load that still leaves charging running; the second is the full 5A, used with charging turned off.
  • Charge to 80% in 24 hours: batteries from 2.5Ah to 17Ah are brought back to most of their capacity within a day.

Installing it

Fix the base plate inside the enclosure, keeping the PSU PCB cover in place. Leave space around it for the battery leads and the mains cable.

As a rule, isolate the mains before any work on the board. Mains and standby battery work is for a competent electrician or fire alarm engineer.

Planning your system

To change settings, add the C-TEC BF423 configurator and a PC. A remote thermistor can be added for temperature-compensated charging away from the board.

Pick an enclosure big enough for the batteries you need, up to 17Ah. Yuasa batteries cover common VRLA sizes, and other fire alarm power supplies are grouped together for comparison.

Standards and ratings explained

EN54-4 is the European standard for fire alarm power supply equipment. EN50131-6 is the standard for intruder alarm power supplies, with grades 1 to 4 rising with risk.

VDE 0100-410 relates to protection against electric shock; here it is the basis for the plastic cover over live parts.
