RJ45 Connectors

RJ45 is the eight-position modular connector used on Ethernet cable. This page has crimp plugs for making up patch leads, including pass-through types, strain relief boots, inline couplers that join two leads, and Cat5e and Cat6 outlet modules and wall outlets with IDC terminals for finishing a run at the wall, with an RJ12 plug and a USB-C Ethernet adaptor alongside.

Choosing RJ45 Connectors

Work out whether the cable ends in a plug, a join or a wall outlet, then match the part to the cable category.

Crimp plugs

Standard 8P8C crimp plugs include the AV:Link 779.224UK, in a pack of 100, and the Haydon Cat5/Cat5e crimp plugs in a pack of 10. Pass-through plugs let the pair order be checked before crimping: the Haydon HAY-RJ45CAT6-10RAP has gold-plated contacts, and the HAY-RJ45CAT6-T100RAP is a tub of 100. The AV:Link 779.222UK is an RJ12 6P6C plug.

Boots and couplers

A strain relief boot protects the joint: the AV:Link 113.120UK suits Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a cable, and the Haydon RJ45 strain relief boot is a grey one for Cat5. Female-to-female couplers such as the AV:Link 779.232UK and the Haydon HAY-RJ45COUPLER join two terminated patch leads, and the HAY-RJ45COUPLERSH is fully shielded for STP or FTP leads. The AV:Link 779.231UK joins two solid cables and is supplied with cable ties.

Outlets and modules

At the wall, the Knightsbridge NETCAT5WH and NETCAT5BK are Cat5e RJ45 modules and the NETCAT6GY a Cat6 module, sized 25 x 50mm for euro-module faceplates. The SFRJ45MW and SFRJ45MB are screwless Cat5e outlets certified to BS 5733, and the MRJ45 is a metal-clad Cat5e outlet with IDC terminals and a back box.

Cat5e or Cat6

Cat6 parts include the Haydon pass-through plugs, the NETCAT6GY module and the 779.231UK and NETRJC6 couplers, while the NETCAT5 modules, the NETRJC5 coupler and the SFRJ45 outlets are Cat5e. Crimp plugs need a matching crimper from our wire strippers and crimpers.

Brands we stock in RJ45 Connectors

AV:Link, Haydon and Knightsbridge.

Knightsbridge makes the wall outlets and outlet modules here, Haydon and AV:Link supply the plugs and boots, and in-line couplers come from Knightsbridge, Haydon and AV:Link.

Frequently asked questions

What is an RJ45 connector?

An RJ45 connector is the eight-position, eight-contact modular plug or socket used on Ethernet cable, described as 8P8C. The AV:Link 779.224UK and the Haydon Cat5/Cat5e crimp plugs are 8P8C crimp plugs for the end of a cable, while outlet modules such as the Knightsbridge NETCAT5WH put an RJ45 socket on a wall faceplate with IDC terminals behind it.

What is a pass-through RJ45 plug?

A plug that lets the cable conductors run out through its front, so the pair order can be checked before it is crimped. The Haydon HAY-RJ45CAT6-10RAP and HAY-RJ45CAT6-T100RAP are Cat6 pass-through plugs, designed for use with a rapid-fit (pass-through) crimp tool. The Haydon RJ45 Cat6 rapid-fit crimp connector is also a pass-through plug.

Do I need Cat5e or Cat6 RJ45 connectors?

Use connectors rated for the cable being terminated. For Cat6, choose parts such as the Haydon HAY-RJ45CAT6-10RAP plugs, the Knightsbridge NETCAT6GY outlet module or the NETRJC6 coupler; for Cat5e, the NETCAT5WH module, the NETRJC5 coupler and the SFRJ45MW outlet. The AV:Link 113.120UK boot suits Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a cable.

How do I join two Ethernet cables?

With an RJ45 inline coupler. Female-to-female couplers such as the AV:Link 779.232UK and Haydon HAY-RJ45COUPLER join two terminated patch leads, the Haydon HAY-RJ45COUPLERSH is fully shielded for STP or FTP leads, and the AV:Link 779.231UK joins two solid cables, with a coloured wiring label on top and cable ties in the pack.

What does an RJ45 boot do?

A boot slides over the back of an RJ45 plug to give the cable strain relief, so bending and pulling do not strain the joint. The AV:Link 113.120UK is a black boot for stranded or solid Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a cable in a pack of 10, and the Haydon RJ45 strain relief boot is grey, for Cat5 cable, also in a pack of 10.

How do I fit an RJ45 socket on the wall?

Terminate the cable onto a wall outlet or an outlet module with IDC terminals. The Knightsbridge SFRJ45MW and SFRJ45MB are screwless Cat5e outlets certified to BS 5733 that need a mounting box of 35mm depth or more, with the IDC tool included, and the MRJ45 is a metal-clad Cat5e outlet supplied with its back box.

What is an RJ45 outlet module?

A 25 x 50mm euro-module socket that clips into a modular faceplate beside other modules. The Knightsbridge NETCAT5WH in white and NETCAT5BK in black are UTP Cat5e RJ45 modules, and the NETCAT6GY is a grey UTP Cat6 module, with IDC terminals on the back for the cable.

Is an RJ12 plug the same as an RJ45 plug?

No, an RJ12 plug has six positions and six contacts (6P6C), against the eight positions and eight contacts (8P8C) of an RJ45. The AV:Link 779.222UK is an RJ12 6P6C crimp plug in a pack of 10; for network cable, use an 8P8C RJ45 plug such as the AV:Link 779.224UK.

Can I add an Ethernet port to a laptop?

Yes, with a USB-C to RJ45 adaptor. The AV:Link 500.104UK converts a USB3.0 Type-C port into a Gigabit Ethernet port at 10/100/1000Mbps, with plug-and-play set-up and a brushed aluminium case, for laptops and PCs that have no Ethernet socket of their own.
