Mercury Extension Leads

Mercury extension leads here are mains extension leads in formats from 1 to 8 gang, including switched, surge protected and remote-controlled USB versions, plus IEC plug to IEC socket extensions and two DC extension leads. Examples include the 430.003UK 4 gang lead with keyhole slots for wall mounting, the 429.850UK 6 gang surge protected lead, the 114.053UK IEC extension and the 660.466UK 2.1 x 5.5mm DC extension lead.

Choosing Mercury Extension Leads

Count the plugs to be powered and measure the distance to the wall socket, then decide whether the lead needs surge protection, switching or a different connector.

Gangs and lengths

Lead lengths include 1m, 2m, 3m and 5m. The 429.763UK and 429.733UK are rewireable 1 gang leads at 3m and 5m, while the 2 gang 429.727UK, 429.767UK and 429.743UK are non-rewireable. Four gang leads such as the 430.002UK at 1m and the 430.005UK at 5m have keyhole slots for wall mounting, and the 430.835UK and 430.836UK come in black. For more sockets, the 430.011UK and 429.846UK are 6 gang leads at 2.0m and 5m.

Surge protected and switched leads

Surge protected leads such as the 4 gang 429.845UK and the 6 gang 429.776UK and 429.850UK have surge and spike protection with a neon indicator, to protect computers and sensitive electronic equipment. The 429.845UK and the 4 gang 430.009UK are also tested to IEC61051, CECC 42200 and CECC 42201. The 429.797UK combines surge protection with 8 neon switches on its 8 gangs, and the 430.007UK is a 4 gang lead with individual switches.

Remote-controlled USB lead

The 429.952UK is a 3 gang lead with individual remote control for each socket at a range of up to 30m, 2 x USB A and 1 x USB C sockets for charging portable devices, and overload, over current and surge protection.

IEC and DC extension leads

The 114.051UK, 114.053UK and 114.057UK run from an IEC plug to an IEC socket at 1.0m, 2.0m and 5m, with 3 core BSI approved leads for appliances rated up to 2300W. The 660.466UK takes a 2.1 x 5.5mm DC plug to a socket over 3m, for LED lighting or CCTV far from its power supply, and the 660.459UK cigar lighter lead is fused at F5A with an LED indicator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a rewireable and a non-rewireable extension lead?

A rewireable lead is designed for easy maintenance, while a non-rewireable lead is used as supplied. The Mercury 429.733UK and 429.763UK 1 gang leads are rewireable, and the 2 gang 429.727UK, 429.743UK and 429.767UK are non-rewireable. All five conform to BS1363/A and are rated at 13A.

When is a surge protected extension lead worth having?

Choose one for computers and sensitive electronic equipment, which surge protection guards against damage from electrical surges and spikes. The Mercury 429.845UK 4 gang and 429.850UK 6 gang leads have surge and spike protection with a neon indicator, and the 429.845UK is tested to IEC61051, CECC 42200 and CECC 42201. The 429.797UK adds 8 neon switches to 8 surge protected gangs.

What is an IEC extension lead used for?

It extends an existing IEC mains lead, or powers a desktop monitor from a tower computer. The Mercury 114.051UK, 114.053UK and 114.057UK run from an IEC plug to an IEC socket at 1.0m, 2.0m and 5m, with 3 core BSI approved leads suitable for appliances rated up to 2300W.

Is there an extension lead with USB charging?

Yes, the Mercury 429.952UK 3 gang extension lead has 2 x USB A and 1 x USB C sockets for charging portable devices. The 429.952UK gives individual remote control of each socket at a range of up to 30m, for devices such as TVs, games consoles and Hi-Fi systems in hard-to-reach places, and has overload, over current and surge protection.

Can I extend the power lead to a CCTV camera or LED lighting?

Yes, the Mercury 660.466UK is a 2.1 x 5.5mm DC plug to socket extension lead, 3m long, for LED lighting or CCTV where the power supply is far from the installation point. The 660.466UK is rated up to 5A at 30V. Check that the equipment uses a 2.1 x 5.5mm DC connector before choosing it.

Can an extension lead be fixed to a wall?

Yes, several Mercury leads have keyhole slots for wall mounting, such as the 4 gang 430.003UK and 430.835UK, the 6 gang 429.846UK and the surge protected 429.776UK. The 8 gang 429.797UK also has keyholes for wall mounting, and the 430.002UK, a 1m 4 gang lead, is wall-mountable using the keyhole slots in the back of the unit.
