QTX Microphones

QTX microphones cover presentations, performance and portable PA use. The range takes in VHF and UHF wireless systems with handheld or neckband transmitters, USB-powered U-MIC sets, wired dynamic, shotgun and USB desktop microphones, and replacement wireless mics for QTX portable PA units. The page also carries portable PA systems with wireless mics included, a mini microphone mixer, desk and gooseneck stands, holders, windshields and XLR microphone leads.

Choosing QTX Microphones

Decide first whether the microphone needs to be wireless, then match it to the receiver or PA unit it will work with.

VHF and UHF wireless systems

The 171.804UK is a VHF handheld system with a half-width 1U receiver and up to 50m range, and it needs no licence in the UK. The dual 171.816UK and 171.818UK add a second channel with handheld or neckband transmitters, and a maximum of 2 VHF frequencies can be operated in combination. For UHF, the J-MIC 171.824UK pairs 2 metal-bodied handheld mics with a plug-in receiver that has a rechargeable Li-ion 18650 battery.

USB and wired microphones

U-MIC sets such as the 171.806UK plug their receiver into a USB power supply or port and output to a 3.5mm jack, with a plug-through USB connection so the port can still be used. The 173.853UK is a handheld dynamic mic with an on/off switch and an XLRF to 6.3mm jack lead, and the 173.638UK short shotgun has a switchable cardioid or hypercardioid pattern and a hot-shoe camera mount. The 173.637UK is a desktop USB-C mic with an illuminated live/mute button.

Mics for QTX portable PA units

Several QTX PA units come with wireless mics, and spares are made for particular units. The 178.871UK headset and 178.873UK handheld fit Busker, Quest and PAL units, and the 178.893UK handheld and 178.891UK neckband are VHF models for QRPA and QXPA units.

Essential XLR female to male leads such as the 190.080UK carry balanced signals, while XLR female to 6.3mm mono jack leads such as the 190.086UK are for unbalanced signals.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a VHF or UHF wireless microphone?

Choose VHF for one or two mics on a straightforward system, and UHF for the compact USB and plug-in sets. VHF systems such as the 171.804UK have up to 50m range, and a maximum of 2 VHF frequencies can be operated together. UHF sets such as the J-MIC 171.824UK and the 171.807UK also reach up to 50m and suit presentations, conferences and vocal performers.

Can I use two QTX VHF systems in the same room?

Yes, but a maximum of 2 VHF frequencies can be operated in combination, so two channels is the limit. The dual 171.817UK and 171.819UK already give 2 handheld or 2 neckband channels from one half-width 1U receiver. The U-MIC 171.800UK is a dual handheld UHF alternative that mixes both microphones to a single output.

Can I get a replacement wireless mic for a QTX portable PA?

Yes, spare transmitters are made for particular QTX PA units. The 178.873UK and 178.874UK handhelds are direct replacements for Busker, Quest and PAL units, and the 178.871UK and 178.872UK are headset mics with a VHF beltpack for the same units. For QRPA and QXPA units, the 178.891UK neckband and 178.893UK handheld are VHF models.

Can a QTX wireless mic run from a USB port?

Yes, the U-MIC sets use a receiver that takes its power from a USB power supply or USB port. The 171.806UK single set and 171.800UK dual set output to a 3.5mm jack socket, with a 3.5mm to 6.3mm jack lead included, and a plug-through USB connection lets the port still be used for a flash drive. The 171.806UK handheld transmitter runs on 2 x AA batteries.

Which QTX microphone suits a camera?

A shotgun microphone with a camera mount. The 173.638UK short and 173.639UK long shotguns have a battery compartment in the body, an integral XLRM connector and a switchable cardioid or hypercardioid pattern. They come with a lead, clip, foam windshield and hot-shoe camera mount, so they can sit on top of a camera.

Do I need an XLR to XLR or an XLR to jack lead?

Use XLR to XLR for a balanced connection and XLR to 6.3mm jack for an unbalanced input. The Essential 190.081UK is a 3.0m XLR female to male lead for balanced signals, and the 190.087UK is a 6.0m XLR female to 6.3mm mono jack lead for unbalanced signals. They have a soft-grip, anti-tangle rubberised jacket and machine-soldered connections.
