How to Set Up and Use the WME DL1 Smart Lock: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for UK Homes

Jo Bebbington |

If you’re ready to ditch old-fashioned keys and upgrade to keyless entry, the WME DL1 Smart Lock is a brilliant place to start. It gives you PIN codes, cards and fingerprint access in one neat unit, and it’s designed to be easy for both homeowners and installers to set up.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through:

  1. How to power up and reset the DL1
  2. How to change the default master code (you must do this)
  3. How to add fingerprints, cards and PINs for your family or staff
  4. How to lock and unlock the door in everyday use
  5. What to do if the batteries go flat or someone keeps guessing codes

Whether you’re an electrician fitting these for clients, or a homeowner setting up your first smart lock, this guide will keep things simple and clear.

Why Choose the DL1 Smart Lock?

The DL1 gives you the features people expect from modern smart locks, without the faff:

  • Multiple ways to unlock – fingerprint, PIN code, card/fob and mechanical key
  • Capacity for multiple users, so you can set up codes for family members, cleaners, staff or guests
  • Auto-locking when the door closes, to stop that “Did I lock the door?” panic
  • Anti-tamper alarm and wrong-try lock-out if someone tries to brute-force their way in
  • Emergency key override and USB-C power input if the batteries ever die

It’s a great fit for front doors, side doors, apartments, HMOs and small business premises.

On the WME site you can position it alongside the DL2 Smart Lock and the wider Smart Locks & Access Control collection to help shoppers compare options.

Step 1: Power Up the Lock

The first job is to get power into the back body:

  • Remove the rear battery cover, insert 4 × AA batteries, and refit the cover.

Once powered, the lock will beep and light up when you touch the keypad.

Pro tip for installers: always do the first power-up with the door open so you don’t accidentally lock yourself out while testing.

Step 2: Factory Reset (If It’s a New Install or a Takeover)

If the lock is brand new you can go straight to changing the master code, but if you’ve taken over a property it’s best to wipe everything first.

To reset:

  • Hold the RESET button on the inside body until you hear the second beep or voice prompt.

This clears every saved user and resets the master code back to 1234. Any fingerprint or card will open the door in this state, so don’t leave it like that for long.

Step 3: Change the Master Code (Essential)

Your master code controls all programming, so it must be unique.

  1. Wake the keypad by touching it.
  2. Press * 0 # to enter function mode.
  3. Enter the current master code (1234 after reset) followed by #.
  4. Enter function code 10 # to change master.
  5. Type your new master PIN followed by #.
  6. Re-enter the same PIN and # to confirm.

Write the new master code down somewhere secure. Without it, you’ll have to reset the whole lock again to regain control.

Step 4: Add Master Users (Optional but Recommended)

The DL1 supports up to five master users (ID 1–5). Masters can add and remove normal users, change settings and so on.

To register a master:

  1. Wake the keypad → * 0 #.
  2. Enter the master code followed by #.
  3. Enter 11 # to register a new master.
  4. When prompted, present the master’s fingerprint, card/fob or set a master PIN.

You can use extended function codes 111–115 if you ever want to allocate a specific master ID, and 121–125 to remove a particular master later.

Step 5: Add Normal Users – Codes, Cards & Fingerprints

Now for the everyday users: family, staff, cleaners, tenants and so on.

  1. Touch the keypad to wake it.
  2. Press * 1 # to enter user registration mode.
  3. Verify using a master fingerprint/card/code followed by #.

Then choose one of the following:

  • User PIN → Enter new code + #, then repeat the same code + #.
  • User fingerprint → Place and lift the finger four times until the lock confirms.
  • User card → Present the new card or fob to the reader.

The lock can handle a generous number of users (fingerprints, cards and PINs up to ID 95 depending on model), which is plenty for most homes and small businesses.

For more advanced projects, use function codes 211–2195 to register a specific ID and 221–2295 to delete users by ID later.

Step 6: Everyday Locking and Unlocking

Once set up, day-to-day use is simple:

To unlock from outside:

  • Touch the keypad → enter PIN followed by #,
  • or present a registered card,
  • or use a registered fingerprint.

To lock the door:

  • In Auto-lock mode, the lock will re-lock automatically when the door closes.
  • In Manual mode, either turn the internal knob or press the front Lock/Unlock button.

If the door isn’t properly latched, the lock will beep for up to 100 seconds to warn you.

Step 7: Volume, Language & Battery Checks

You can customise the lock’s feedback and check the battery level:

  1. Wake keypad → * 0 #.
  2. Enter master code followed by #.
  3. Use one of the following:
  • 821 # – High volume
  • 822 # – Low volume
  • 832 # – Switch audio to English
  • 95 # – Check battery status

Safety Features You Should Know About

The DL1 is designed with safety in mind:

  • Wrong-try protection – 5 failed attempts triggers an alarm and a 3-minute lock-out.
  • Emergency key override – Use the mechanical key behind the cylinder cover if anything goes wrong.
  • Emergency USB-C power – If the batteries die while you’re outside, plug in a power bank to wake the lock and open it normally.
