Fibre Media Converters

A fibre media converter turns an Ethernet signal on copper cable into light on optical fibre and back, so a network can reach outbuildings, gates, poles and remote cabinets that copper cannot. This collection covers mini and DIN rail Ethernet converters with SFP ports, PoE converters that power a camera at the far end, 10G models, rack chassis, and fibre links for camera video, serial data and contact closures.

Choosing Fibre Media Converters

Start from the fibre: single-mode or multi-mode, one fibre or two, and its connector. Then choose the Ethernet speed, whether the far device needs PoE, and where the converter will be mounted.

SFP converters

Many converters here, such as the AMG260 series and the Nitek ML300, take a standard SFP module, so the optic can be matched to the fibre type and distance. AMG210M mini converters have DIP switches for link fault pass-through, port isolation and jumbo frames, and the AMG210M-1X-1XS runs at 10G through an SFP+ port.

PoE at the far end

A PoE media converter powers a camera or access point on its copper port. AMG210M PoE models such as the AMG210M-1GAT-1SM1A-P30 give 30W per port, AMG265M P90 models such as the AMG265M-1GBT-1S-P90 offer 60W or 90W under IEEE 802.3bt, and the Comnet CNGE2MCPOEBT sources up to 90W.

Industrial and rack mounting

DIN rail converters such as the AMG260 series suit camera poles and roadside cabinets, and the TRENDnet TI-F10SC is IP40 with a -40 to 75 °C operating range. In a comms room, the 12-slot AMG210C 1U chassis takes AMG210M converters on dual hot-swap AC supplies.

Video, data and contact closures

AMGFIB transmitters and receivers send camera video over fibre, Comnet FDX60 and AMGFIB serial units carry RS422 and RS485 data, and Comnet FDC10 modules carry contact closures.

Frequently asked questions

What does a fibre media converter do?

It converts an Ethernet signal on copper cable to light on optical fibre and back, so a network can reach a building, pole or gate far beyond the reach of copper Ethernet cable. The Axis 03534-001 (TU8008), for example, converts an Ethernet signal for use over optical fibre and can be daisy-chained. Converters work in pairs, or with a fibre switch at one end.

Should single-mode or multi-mode fibre be used?

Single-mode for long runs, multi-mode for shorter links across a site. AMG's integrated SFPs show the difference: the AMG210M-1FAT-1SS1A-P30 has a singlemode, single fibre 20Km SFP, while the AMG210M-1FAT-1SM1A-P30 has a multimode, single fibre 2Km SFP. Match the converter to the fibre already installed, since the two types cannot be mixed on one link.

What is an SFP media converter?

One with a slot for a small plug-in optical module (SFP) instead of a fixed fibre port, so the optic can be chosen for the fibre type, connector and distance. The Nitek ML300 accepts industry-standard SFPs, and Comnet CNFE2MCPOE models need SFP modules bought separately. Some AMG210M PoE models come with an integrated SFP fitted.

Can a media converter power a camera?

Yes, a PoE media converter supplies power on its copper port. AMG210M PoE models give 30W per port, Nitek ML300POE models inject up to 30W, and 802.3bt models such as the AMG265M-1GBT-1S-P90-T and Comnet CNGE2MCPOEBT reach 90W for high-power PoE devices. Check the device's PoE class against the converter before choosing.

Is there a 10 Gigabit media converter?

Yes, the AMG210M-1X-1XS mini converter and the TRENDnet TFC-10GSFP both run at 10G through an SFP+ port and also support 5G, 2.5G and 1G. The TRENDnet comes with a power adapter for standalone use, and AMG's 10Gb models add 3R functions for regenerating the signal on long links.

Which media converters suit roadside cabinets or camera poles?

Hardened DIN rail models such as the AMG260 series, which AMG describes as suited to camera poles and roadside cabinets. The TRENDnet TI-F10SC is IP40 rated with a -40 to 75 °C operating range, and the Veracity VLT-1N-SC100 is ruggedised with an extended temperature range and railway EMC compliance for harsh sites.

Can analogue CCTV cameras be sent over fibre?

Yes, with a video transmitter and receiver pair. AMGFIB transmitters such as the AMGFIB-1VT-M1A carry uncompressed CVBS, CVI, TVI and AHD camera video up to 5MP, and Comnet FVT110 and FVR110 units send digitally encoded video with bi-directional data over one multimode or single-mode fibre.

How are many media converters mounted in a comms rack?

In a rack chassis: the AMG210C is a 1U, 19-inch chassis with 12 slots for AMG210M mini converters (non-PoE models) and dual hot-swappable AC power supplies. AMG260B blade cards fit AMG's blade chassis at high density, and the Comnet CNMC4SFP is a rack-mount Ethernet media converter.

Can RS485 data or contact closures be sent over fibre?

Yes. Comnet FDX60 transceivers carry RS232, RS422 or RS485 data over one or two fibres, and AMGFIB serial units such as the AMGFIB-1SD-3CC-M1A carry one RS422 or RS485 channel plus three contact closures. Comnet FDC10 modules send contact closures in both directions over one fibre, with a 0.5 amp contact output.
