Mercury Products

Mercury makes everyday electrical and electronic supplies, and this page gathers its range in one place: extension leads and reels, trailing sockets, plugs, IEC leads and travel adaptors, 5 x 20mm and 6 x 32mm fuses, cable on reels such as 100m and 305m, TV aerials and amplifiers, multimeters and soldering irons, USB chargers and inverters, torches, door chimes and smoke alarms. Products are listed under Mercury part codes such as 429.871UK.

Choosing Mercury Products

Find the family first, then check the rating on the product itself: current and length on mains leads, size and blow speed on fuses, gain on aerials.

Mains leads, reels and adaptors

Extension leads include the 429.797UK, an 8 gang lead with surge protection and a neon switch per socket, and the 429.743UK 2 gang lead at 5.0m. Extension reels such as the 429.871UK have a thermal cut out and a 13A fused plug, and the 429.880UK garden reel has two IP54 splashproof sockets on 20m of orange cable. The 429.617UK is a rewirable 4 gang trailing socket, the 114.003UK a UK plug to IEC C13 lead, and the 429.905UK lets a UK plug fit a European Schuko socket.

Fuses

Glass fuses come slow blow, such as the 787.005UK 315mA, and quick blow, such as the 787.342UK 6 x 32mm 20A, mostly in packs of ten. The 799.050UK is an assortment of 160 quick blow 5 x 20mm fuses from 0.5A to 10A.

Cable, TV and data

The 804.341UK is 3183Y three core round PVC flex, the 801.422UK figure 8 speaker cable mixes copper and CCA conductors, and the 808.011UK is Cat6 U/UTP cable on a 305m box. For television, the 120.503UK is a mains powered amplified indoor aerial and the 130.031UK a 4 way distribution amplifier with a 5G/4G filter.

Test, tools and power

The 600.100UK multimeter has 32 ranges and the 600.113UK clamp meter reads up to 600A AC, and the 700.744UK is a 30W soldering iron. The 652.100UK inverter gives a pure sine wave and the 652.002UK a modified sine wave, each producing 230V from a 12V or 24V battery. The 421.725UK is a 65W GaN USB charger with interchangeable UK, US and EU plugs.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a Mercury extension reel have a thermal cut out?

It is there to prevent overloading: reels such as the 429.871UK and the 429.877UK 25m reel have a built-in thermal cut out and a 13A fused plug. The 429.871UK also has an enclosed drum that protects the cable when it is not in use. For temporary power outdoors, the 429.880UK garden reel has two IP54 splashproof sockets.

Should I fit a slow blow or quick blow fuse?

Fit the same type, size and rating as the fuse you are replacing. Slow blow fuses such as the 787.021UK suit circuits that need a time delay for heavy start-up currents, while quick blow fuses such as the 787.273UK give immediate protection. Mercury glass fuses here are 5 x 20mm or 6 x 32mm, mostly ten to a pack.

Do I need a pure sine wave or modified sine wave inverter?

Go by the equipment you plan to run. The 652.100UK pure sine wave inverter is for use with TVs, computers and kettles, while the 652.002UK modified sine wave model is for use with TVs, lighting, fans and kettles. The 652.100UK and 652.002UK run 230V mains equipment from a 12V or 24V battery and have a soft start.

Which indoor aerial should I choose?

Pick an amplified aerial where the signal is weak and a passive one where it is strong. The 120.503UK is mains powered, with gain adjusted on the unit, a loop aerial for UHF TV and telescopic aerials for VHF and FM. The 120.515UK is a paper-thin passive aerial rated for up to 45 miles reception.

Which adaptor lets me use UK plugs abroad?

Use a UK to Europe travel adaptor such as the 429.905UK, which lets a UK 3 pin plug fit a European Schuko socket, with a 10A maximum rating and 2300W load, conforming to BS8546:2016. The 429.910UK adds two USB ports. For the other way round, the 429.829UK takes a European Schuko plug into a UK socket.
